I'm going to Santiago, Chile for half a year, and I need to improve my Spanish. A lot of my friends who speak Spanish say that listening to music, and trying to sing the lyrics is a good way to get the hang of it. So what are some good Spanish-speaking, contemporary artists? I love Manu Chao, the Buena Vista Social Club, Ozomatli, and what little I have heard of Juanes...

If you want the more romantic/ballad type songs, I'd recommend Luis Miguel, maybe Jose Jose.
If you want more rock, I'd recommend Los Lobos or to a lesser extent, Los Lonely Boys.
There's also Mana and the whole Rock en Espanol thing that I'm not a big fan of.
In terms of genres, I'd recommend Bachatas.

I said maybe. The only thing on my list I'm actually a fan of is Luis Miguel.
Music in Spanish, IMO, is generally shitty. I tried to recommend what I thought was the least shittiest.

It is a good way to meet Spanish ladies as well because they enjoy this sort of dancing.

Thanks for the recs so far. I dig salsa, bossa, samba, and all of the latin jazz styles, but I'm mostly trying to get some modern, I guess you could say rock, music.
I like Mana, they aren't considered like the NSync of Latin America are they?
I like Mana, they aren't considered like the NSync of Latin America are they?
agian modern what? you their exist old slas and modern salsa, old reggaeton and new reggaeton etc. if you wish say popular go for pop and reggaeton.
pop is generally crap, wtherh it be in english spanish, arabic or whatever langaug. plus the popular one will differ country to country. for example the pope listened to in colomabia will nto eb ths same that is heard in argentina, and on the same note for some odd reason ranchero is extremely popular in colombia.
reggaeton for the most part is fairly universal exceptt for panama colombia(for it being fairly affected by the reggaeton culture of panama) and puerto rico.
here are the popular ones
wisin y yandel
Daddy Yankee
hector el bambino
calle 13
don omar
tony tun tun
el general
nigga(mas o menos)
hector el father
these guys should be know about everywhere
