Put the bottles in a separate bin, and put that bin out front.

I do at Christmas.

I actually was startled a few weeks back by noise in the front of my house and I went out and saw a woman taking the cans out of my recycle box. It was late at night, she either saw me or heard me open the door, but did not look up and kept going through the cans. When she was done she put everything back in it's place, nice and neat, and walked to a waiting car at the end of the road. Probably goes through the neighborhood to get cans. I figured it was someone that is unemployed and needing some extra cash.

If Remember correctly this is the episode to This American Life where they follow some garbagemen, and then an arm of the NY city gov't tasked with enforcement of the city's righ to the paper placed out for the recycling. Apperantly the paper has value as a source of revenue to the city and they have to protect it from garbage rustlers.

I read tipping as an insult rather than a sign of respect. That is to say that I think of tipping as something that only applies to very menial and scheduled types of ah... servants. I tip the waiter, i tip the doorman, i do not tip the carpenter or the lawyer.

Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

Oh, or this:

I've always wondered, can you actually (and legally) shoot the guy for digging through your trash? Being on your property after you've asked him to leave?

No. You cannot defend your property with lethal force.
