Toronto for a weekend

Visiting Toronto for a weekend to see a friend. I'll let her show me around and all, but I was wondering if there are some specific things I should check out? Such as:

  • Random restaurants that are really unique or tasty, hole-in-the-wall is fine (nothing with entrees averaging >$30 a person please)
  • Cool bars, ideally romantic. Wine bars, really hip lounges, as long as there is a great vibe. Speakeasy vibe can also work. Super bonus points for interesting music - I am reminded of an Argentine wine bar I went to in Saigon with a friend that was playing some kind of sexy South American jazzy music in the background, not too unlike Buena Vista Social Club. Something like that would be cool. Not looking for places BLASTING music or too crowded with people.
  • Anything else that's worth checking out, but nothing touristy. Not looking to go sight-seeing.

Thanks.

Recently had a great dinner at Toritos in Kensington Market. Their churros are to die for. Need to share with at least 3 other people though. For more tips, check out yelp.ca. Oh yeah, and this is my favorite foodie store: it's got the naughty contraband unpasteurised cheese!

My suggestions are The Rebel House up on Yonge St., Duggans Brewery on Victoria, Bar Italia in Little Italy, in fact you can find a ton of places to go to in Little Italy on college St. West of Bathurst. If you have any more questions PM me.

Random restaurants
---

These are my fav places to eat in Toronto. Keep in mind that i'm a university student and these places are all <$20 per person. I eat out a lot because I have no time to cook so I've tried almost everything in the area around U of T/ downtown core.

Korean BBQ
They serve you raw meat in trays and you grill it up yourself on the gas grill in the middle of the table. its ~$20 a person, all you can eat/drink. There are many locations.
Stuff is so good that i always overeat and feel like shit because i can't move/breathe/study. Really good kimchi here.

Thai One On
The best pad thai in the city in the opinion of myself and my friends (and we've had A LOT of pad thai).
Curry chicken pad thai - $12, sometimes on daily special for $7. 15% off if you have student ID

Congee Queen
good congee. Large portions. All the real chinese ppl go there, so you know it's legit.
~$15/person - seafood congee and house special congee are good.

King's Noodle House
Agreed to be the best food in china town.
Amazing food, very good prices. Try the beijing duck. It's AMAZING. The lychee cooler is very good too.
<$10/ person

I hope this helps.

Not sure if its too late for this to be useful for you or not, but this place is worth checking out:

http://www.beerbistro.com/

Then there is a place called Smokeless Joe that doesn't even have their own website, but its a great beer bar. Probably about 300 beers on hand to pick from at any given time. Tiny little place, but very cool.

Good call on Smokeless Joe, I haven't been there in years.

I can also vouch for smokeless joe's. Went there with a guy and it can be surprisingly romantic if both people are laid back. The drake hotel is nice to hang out at, it has three different levels with different vibes, including a nice rooftop patio. It's kind of hipster, but ossington has a nice jazz lounge and the Dakota tavern, which usually has live bluegrass or bluesy type rock playing. I had a great time there.

I'm a student in Toronto also - tell me more good cheap stuff in the downtown core, buddy!

okay, more cheap student food places.

I personally like BIG sushi near bloor and spadina. They have cheap lunch specials before 5pm for ~$7. pretty large portions, you can eat there for <$10. Best bang for your buck sushi wise in that area.

This placed that everyone calls "Pho Train" is pretty good. They open until 4-5am, so it's a good place to go for drunken meals. It's a little bit south of Dundas on the west side of Spadina. I think the the name on the sign is "Xin Hua", but everyone calls it train. There's a picture of a train on the signage.
You can get pho (noodles) + a drink for <$10. -> 101 and 38 are good.
The mango shake is highly recommended. Only the pho is good there, everything else is mediocre.
note: Do not park your car in the alley beside the restaurant, don't be tempted because it's free parking. I've seen many cars get broken into while eating my meals.

Salad king was pretty cheap + good food. They are currently closed because the building they are in collapsed. I don't know what the deal is, but it was popular amongst all the college students. Meals for <$15

Ginger near bloor and yonge is very good for the price. Portions are very large. #65 - chicken and pork steak on rice is my fav. You can ask for egg fried rice instead of white rice at no extra charge.
<$8.

that's it for now.

im always a bit wary of all-you-can-eat sushi places - for the obvious reasons, and because i always overeat and end up cursing fish for a week - but i can't believe i haven't gone to any of the korean bbq places yet. ive always loved that mongolian-grill-style, meat-and-hot-garlic-sauce stuff. mouth-wateringly good

Man, you'll love Korean Grill. I discovered it back in grade 12 and I swear i went to eat there every week for a good 4-5 weeks until I got sick of it.

They have lunch/night owl specials for 8.99 all you can eat, +$1 for all you can drink pop/soy milk.
Lunch is 11am-2pm, nightowl is 10pm-midnight.
regular price is 13.99 i think.
Go to the charles + yonge location, they have the best service. At the location close to the eaton center, some of the employees get pissed if you eat too much and take forever to bring you more food.

No way she is my friend and a girl I really like. Maybe if she was some random slut I met in the gym I would. Oh wait...
