61 hours Lee Child

just read the book, very good, very exciting, excellent end.

not high literature, and riddled with inconsistancies. and, like most of his books it is easy to figure out the "twists" and who done it, but a good entertaining way to spend an afternoon or evening.

its hard for a guy who never was in the military, or a cop to write about a character who is involved in that lifestyle, without making a lot of mistakes. but, that doens't take away the fast pace and the entertainment value.

I've read all of the jack reacher books. They make for great summer reading. I would love to see them made as movies (done right of course). Not sure who could play him though.

+1 on the Reacher books. The follow-up to 61 Hours is due in Sept/Oct already.

They're a gulity pleasure of mine during the summer holidays. Can anyone remember which in the series had Reacher explaining why he prefered Cheaney to Church's and Dainite soles to leather?

I've had to wait on my wife to finish the book, she got to it before me. The whole series is awesome!

^Look into Barry Eisler's series featuring John Rain. New one coming out any day now.

Thanks for the Barry Eisler recommendation, I will give them a shot. Another good series that is along the same lines is by Christopher Reich and his Jonathan Ransom series - just finished the latest one to hit paperback.

+1 on the John Rain series. Will have to look into the Reich novels.

^When I read John Rain, I always picture Tokyo Slim in the lead. :no homo:

+1 on both the Reacher and the Rain series. It's always struck me that Lee Child writes better than most authors in that genre about the mechanics of violence, while Eisler writes better than most about the psychological issues that accompany instigating/getting involved in violence.

Guilty pleasures, both. I am fascinated by Jack Reacher's lifestyle and ability to analyze violent situations. Lee Child never quite delivers for me, though. He has crafted a character with great potential, but his storytelling never quite measures up. That said, I always read them, hoping that Child can put together a novel which lives up to the potential of his main character.

OTOH, Eisler is solid. Great summertime reading.

So, what does everyone think of the ending of 61 hours?

^I was pissed. But then I read the excerpt of the next Lee Child novel and Reacher is in Nebraska.
