A beach house in the Cape? Given this is a family vacation, it would be cool to rent a log cabin in Maine or similar. You'd get the opportunity to spend a lot of time with your kids teaching them how to hike, fish, build a fire, etc.

Head further south then...maybe Charleston, SC. By the way, where are you from?

You're probably right. San Blas might not work for little kids.

that is hwy i think if panama was an option wiht beache beign thethe prefered criterion, los santos would be a btter option preferbly near las tablas( has a decement of tourism so english will nto be large problem.) only and abotu an 90 min from panama by car if he rents one or has driver arranged. the distnace is not far.

cartegena - warm, beautiful old city (about the best preserved renanainse fortifications, certainly in the western hemisphere) good food. there are hotels that have a lot for kids to do. watersports are pretty cheap. good night life. you can take a boat out and see islands that are basically uninhabited.

if you want some more info, pm me. I've been a couple of times with the kids. probrably cheaper than most places you are thinking about.

the one drawback - the water is brown, not blue, until you go out the islands. not poluted, but the city is on a river emptying into the sea. but the water is warm and clean, and the beaches are pretty good. when you go out to the islands (maybe an hour by boat) you get the sparkeling blue water.

oh, and just under 5 hours

the only thing that could be problem is that honestly as though english is spoken in cartagena, fo move around one should have a minimum of spanish, which i see fmr the forum is nto common with us citizens.
