how much on your hobbies?

ok, how much do you spend on your hobbies, not counting clothing. golf, driving, what ever. percentage of take home, or in absolute figures.

I figure now I spend about 1% of my take home. I am wondering what is reasonable, if 2.5% is stretching it.

well, I box, and take judo, and go to the gym. I am thinking of starting to ride horses. private boxing lessons, the gym and dojo memberships cost me about 1-1.25 % of my takehome. if I were to ride once a week, it would just about double it.

I don't play golf, or fish, or sail, and those are all hobbies that people I would consider my peers have. so, the question is, how much would you spend on something like golf for instance?

My hobbies don't cost much, I'm not a golfer. Hiking and cycling are pretty much free after the upfront cost, so for me the percentage is very small.

Up front cost: $500-$2000+ for a set of clubs
Cost per 18 holes if you aren't a club member: $40-150+

Yearly membership cost to a club would vary greatly and I'm guessing the cheapest you'll find is ~$2000

so golf is only maybe 2000 bucks a year or less (assuming 36 holes a month 6 months out of the year)? I thought is was a lot more than that.

1% on weightlifting club dues
1% of tiger balm, massages, bags of ice etc

are you planning on using this to justify a more expensive hobby?

of course. but justifying to myself. I can afford to spend a little more, I am not sure that I should.

It really depends on if you have a membership to a club and how expensive that club is. They can run up to like 50k per year++. If you're only playing twice a month, which is pretty infrequent, then yeah it won't be too expensive.

how about a serious golfer?

Maybe 4-5k/year? So 4-5%. I don't know if it'll stay up that high, but probably, as long as I don't have kids... I never have trouble finding things to spend money on. I'm still able to bank ~33% of my gross though, which I think is good enough. I save money by not having a car and paying less rent than I can afford, so i can spend more on other things.

A serious golfer would likely join a club that charges an initial fee then a yearly fee Found this here: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m.../ai_109467586/ The initiation fee to join a private club can vary between nothing and $350,000, according to figures supplied by ClubCorp, which owns and operates a number of private golf courses nationwide. Annual fees typically range from $3,000 to $15,000, and those cover everything from carts to the club's employee salaries to the course's maintenance budget. Then there's the monthly food-and-beverage minimum at most clubs, which usually adds another $600 to $2,500 annually. So I'd estimate 5k/year minimum for a serious golfer.

^^ That's gonna be typical for a lot of private clubs in general. A ski club we considered joining when I was a kid (15 yrs ago) was 40k + 5k/yr. So... Not cheap, and make sure you're not planning on moving.
