Winter's Bone movie

Any of you seen "Winter's Bone" yet? My wife and I saw it yesterday. I thought it was just excellent. My wife didn't like it as well. I found it eerie, creepy, moody, haunting and suspenseful, even though there was little actual violence in the movie. Making it even better was that the setting was realistic and contemporary--no vampires, space monsters, conspiracies to rule the world or anything like that.

For those of you not familiar with it, the story is set in the Missouri Ozarks. The protagonist is a 17 year old girl, whose father, a "crank" cooker, has failed to show up for trial, thereby forfeiting his bail, which has been collateralized by the family homestead. Thus, unless he can be found, the heroine, her disabled mother and two younger siblings will be rendered homeless. The plot centers around her efforts to track him down in the sinister meth-lab culture of the region.

I haven't seen it. In fact, I hadn't even heard of it until this thread, but you piqued my interest. I just looked it up, and it sounds interesting. I've saved it in my Netflix queue, so I'll definitely be checking it out when it's released on disc.

Didn't get a chance to go see it when it was playing at SIFF, but it won the best director and best actress Golden Space Needles.

Just went to see it again I had liked it so much the first time, which is something I rarely do. It seems to be in more general release. I certainly can strongly recommend seeing this movie.

Would like to resurrect this thread and encourage all of you to check this film out. I was so impressed that I went bqack to re-read the novel and would be curious to see if anyone else who checks out both the book and the film would agree with any of my initial reactions.
1. The best parts of the film were pretty much directly taken from the book (including especially memorable lines of dialogue)
2. In adapting the book to do the screenplay for the film, the results seem (to me) to be mixed. Some plot elements from the book (e.g., the sapphic relationship between Ree and Gail, the 'stoned on mushrooms rape' flashback, the whole 'fists of god' religious cult element) are ok being cut since they might have a tendency to clutter up the narrative thread. On the other hand, elements related to Ree's mother's past (including the fact that one of the young children was actually fathered by one of the kinfolk living nearby when Jessup was in jail) seem to have been dropped to the detriment of a fully- fleshed-out understanding of the characters.
3. Some elements that were included in the film but do not appear in the book strike me as being especially weak and contribute little (e.g. the whole artsy black and white squirrel in a forest montage when Ree is considering having to sell the timberland, and the painfully awkward interaction with the Army recruiter which makes Ree come across as far less savvy and competent than the whole film has led us to believe.)

All in all, though, well worth checking out.

It's sad this film didn't get a wider release. Like The Road last year, it's an excellent adaptation of excellent source material. I don't really understand the decision not to promote it and put it in more theaters. There is an audience for this thing...

Why does Roger Ebert still not have a review of this?

I think Ebert has one foot in the grave, dude^^

Actually, I'm pretty sure that I saw an Ebert review for the film the last time I was over on the Drudge Report site.

Yeah, I just saw it's on his site, but he reviewed it two months ago.
