Are people as a whole Evil?

I used to want to help people, used to want to get into the medical field to help people. Thought that with so many people being assholes, I could be one who's not and make a difference. I used to think that people were mostly good, and that most tried to do the right thing. Im pretty sure thats about the opposite now. People are about as evil as evil can get. And my loss to want to help them is a blow to me. People/humans....

We are a doomed bunch.

If everyone is one way and you're another I'd say you're evil...

There are no such things as "good" or "evil" on objective, universal, nonrelative scales. Philosophically, something not unlike the theory of general relativity applies to morality. Something is only "good" or "evil" with respect to something else. Even more to the point, morality is simply a mental construct humans have devised for themselves to help explain the universe. It is not some inherent property of existence or nature. There are no bosonic force-particles of "good" or "evil" floating around out there.

True. And you win. I feel that most people are "bad" to each other more so then "good".

..for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

Evil seems a little heavy-handed. I would agree that more people seem to be self-centered and devoid of empathy today.

People are selfish but good underneath it all.

yes

basically we are fucked, do you know anyone who does anything without self benifit? we are the metaphysical equivalent of gravity.

even when you give money to charity you do it because it makes you feel good inside...

we are built (evolutionary wise) to strive towards pleasure and run away from torment.
you could probably write down human insentive in two lines of code (if your a programmer)

we are basically like dogs when they look at something unrecognised,,,,

CAN I FUCK IT, FIGHT IT OR EAT IT, all are for the benifit of the individual, we are fucking doomed.

hows that for optimism....

I don't understand your conclusion that we're "doomed." I buy the argument that humans are, by nature, self-centered and opportunistic because those traits have been successful from an evolutionary standpoint. But other traits have also been selected, e.g., cooperation and empathy. We'd be running around stabbing one another for hunks of meat to this day if cooperation weren't a beneficial survival trait for our species.

Attempts to reduce the human biological/neurological condition to "two lines of code" are completely absurd for their simplicity. This is why I don't buy into humanistic philosophy as a legitimate modern discipline, for example.

Everything that exists can be explained materialistically and physically (note that, by "materialistic," I'm not talking about greed; I'm talking about physical being). Biology, and emergent characteristics thereof -- such as the human mind -- are no different.

most people are basically good. some are evil. some people who do things that are evil, think that they are doing good, by their own understanding of good.

as to helping out others - don't worry about whether they "deserve it" or not. if you want to devote your life, or an hour of your life to a certaint service, don't think about if the recipiants are deserving or grateful, think about the value of the act itself.
