Not the visit I just did in April, but the time before I visited home, family took us out to a supposedly "great" Italian restaurant. I saw calamari in the menu so included it as one of the appys. Everyone looked at me like I was insane. The consensus was why I would want something like a rubber band? I told them nonsense, calamari is tender and almost unctuous, a great protein that adapts to so many presentations.
Yeah, almost choked on the first piece.
Made it a point to try it at several places held in high repute. All sucked. I came to the conclusion that it wasn't the cooks fault all the time (although the cook certainly didn't help the majority of the time.) What was always a common factor was the crappy product. Big, thick bands, no little legs, little small bodies. They just get bad product back home for some reason.
