Its a good question. I can't disagree that it is far too common but good calamari does exist in Toronto. Ki does a good take on it. I've had it good grilled elsewhere although I can't recall names off the top of my head. Colborne Lane's squid is delicious though it is tentacles and not rings. But even places that should know better don't - the one and only time I ordered it at Via Allegro I was served a massive, chewy, grilled monster from the depths. I expect that at a steakhouse where bigger = better is the mistaken norm, but not at an otherwise-tasty Italian restaurant.

Not the visit I just did in April, but the time before I visited home, family took us out to a supposedly "great" Italian restaurant. I saw calamari in the menu so included it as one of the appys. Everyone looked at me like I was insane. The consensus was why I would want something like a rubber band? I told them nonsense, calamari is tender and almost unctuous, a great protein that adapts to so many presentations.

Yeah, almost choked on the first piece.

Made it a point to try it at several places held in high repute. All sucked. I came to the conclusion that it wasn't the cooks fault all the time (although the cook certainly didn't help the majority of the time.) What was always a common factor was the crappy product. Big, thick bands, no little legs, little small bodies. They just get bad product back home for some reason.

Every time I drive by a local Gilded Korel buffet, I see a huge parking lot filled with cars and a bunch of very fat people waddling in and out thru the supersized doors: it appears to be very popular and thus hugely overrated
