What I don't get is people paying a premium to live in certain neighborhoods, many of which are seemingly identical to others which command more favorable prices.

I don't know. I'm not a fan but I think people like the public schools and the type of housing (commercial/warehouse buildings converted to lofts). For those who work downtown, it's a walk away from work.
