Because everyone I am friends with from HS I still see somewhat semi-regularly. Everyone I'm not friends with from HS, I don't need to see again.

Going back to my small town recently was just eff'ing depressing. If it wasn't for whisky, I would have had to cut the visit short.

+1 Hit the driving range with a high school friend I'm still very close with when I was home for Father's Day weekend. I also have friends visit me every month or so here in NYC.

It's just depressing when you go to the bar and run into all the people who stuck around town, drinking away their sorrow and toward obesity.

Or live in a house where the put plastic over the windows, drive a 20 year old pick up, and shop at second hand stores. That's cool at 20 but sad at 40.

I went to HS in a very small town surrounded by corn fields. The "city" part had/has one of the worst crime rates per capita in the U.S. Sadly, the majority of ppl from my class are still there, or within a 25 mile radius. I guess it's hard for me to imagine what it would be like to still be living in a place where there's virtually nothing to do (and living there for the rest of your life), and the most prominent store within a 30 minute drive is a Walden Books or Bath and Body Works. I don't know if it's just small towns, but you'd be surprised just how many people have no desire to even pursue the idea of doing something remotely great with their life.

I'm from a very small city but don't see all that many people I went to school with. It seems ATL has taken a goodly portion of them particularly the women.

No, but it sounds wonderful.

Are people who stay in these remote hometowns necessarily pathetic? What about the flip side? Maybe they have moderate low-stress jobs, fulfilling hobbies, a house, and a family they enjoy raising. Maybe they have no desire to work 60 hour weeks, renting a $2000 shoebox, and date 100s of people until they're 47 year old white haired parents with a toddler. To each their own.

It's the "getting fat with a goatee" part that is more pathetic than the low-stress lifestyle.

The ppl I know could enjoy the same things by moving 2 hours away with the added benefit of not living in a shit hole.

I don't think this is particularily cool at 20 even; I have never run into a poor person dressed in seconhand clothes, driving an old car and living in a hovel and said to myself "Now that is one cool guy".

damn, you guys are pretty critical toward your classmates , I personally wouldn't mind run into anyone back in the days, from any time, always nice to catch up and just see what have happened to their life.
