Smalltown, USA

I guess I went to elementary school in a small town. Our classes were pretty small and everyone knew everyone. I moved away into a bigger school system for high school, but I still keep in touch with a few guys from my childhood. Anyway, I was roaming around facebook and noticed that of the 50-60 people in my 3rd grade class, 4 had paired off and gotten married already (age 25). It's probably more than that, but this was what I gleaned from ~5 minutes of facebook clicking. I guess this is pretty normal, but it just seemed really...strange...that kids I knew in third grade were now married. I mean I've heard of "high school sweethearts" but "3rd grade sweethearts", really? The other thing I noticed is that everyone got fat. Even the really, really hot girls. They all have chubby boyfriends who often have goatees. It all feels so strange, because I wouldn't give them a second look if I met them at a bar, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have given me the time of day back in grade school. How the tides truly do change... Yeah, that's all. This post had no point.

Now I'm fully grown
And I know where it's at
Somehow I stayed thin
While the other guys got fat

The only thing to do is to send them messages saying "haha i'm balling now and you're married to a fat guy with a goatee. Suck it! (but not mine, fatty)"

This is reminding me of a John Cougar song.

I think most of us that grew up in a small town can relate to this. My age cohort of four or so of us produced a garbageman, a couple drunken deaths, a security guard at a Ford plant and me. It makes you think (not that "me" is anything special, relative to general society). How did you (rhetorical "you") get out and why?

It also makes me feel like I'm missing out on something because the wedding photos literally had 60% of my grade school class in attendance. Must be pretty nice to be lifelong friends with everyone you were friends with since kindergarten. Instead I moved around a bunch and, while I still thankfully have a few good friends from HS and college, it's nothing like what these people have. Still though, at least I'm not fat with a goatee.

That is some awful music right there.^^ I moved to a small town recently. I don't know why everyone always says that people in small towns are friendlier. Not true IMO. All the hot chix are with fat dudes, so I guess looks don't matter and popularity does. I'm screwed.

I grew up in (and unfortunately still reside a lot of the time) in a small town where the 35 kids in my 1st grade class pretty much stayed the same until 12th grade (graduating class of 40 or so)... and K-12 was all in the same building. Indeed, at 25 I too observe that they've all gotten fat (especially their faces)... the former hot girls too, one of whom tries to get my attention on facebook, which i gleefully ignore. A few of them intermarried as well. Interestingly, the one smart girl I remember who was lanky and gross looking through high school, is now pretty damn hot. I think I went throught that same sort of transformation (skinny then hot); ...the take home lesson being I think that intelligent people sometimes take a longer time to mature than the unwashed masses, most of whom peak at 16 or so.

You realize, there is not a chance in hell you're not going to marry Anglo Fat Lady, with hanging Fat Lady arms, get fat, and grow a goatee, right? There is maybe 1% chance this will not be you at 35.

Basically. I am proof positive of that.

Plumpies, I call 'em

I thought this was all common knowledge? Third grade friends for the rest of your life is kinda odd to me though. A few is fine, of course, but 60%? yikes..

There was this one girl I had a summer fling with in college. She was cute but she stopped returning my calls. Ok, fine. No biggie. Hits me up on facebook last year and my. god. Fat, cigarette, gross dudes around here. Felt good man.

This!

Everyone from my hold HS got fat. It's disgusting. If I ever gained that much weight I wouldn't post pictures of it online.

My elementary school was pretty much the opposite of a typical elementary school. Everyone who was so-so, or even downright ugly, somehow got really hot when they grew up.

My high school, on the other hand, followed a pretty typical trajectory. Most folks got fat and ugly.
