How much money would it take to disappear?

I was wondering about this recently. If I wanted to just up and leave my life, and maybe move to a rural area somewhere with less stress, how much savings would that require? What if I wanted to have Internet access? What if I didn't want to be found? PS - I'd hide somewhere that speaks English, thank you very much.

Would you be working? If you plan on retiring and doing jack shit in the country side, and you are 30 and want to have money until you are 90, you would need about $1-2MM.

Are you talking about homesteading or something like that?

As you age you will need more medical attention, and a medical ailment, and accident will eventually end up costing you. Assuming you want to go underground health insurance is out of the question. Belize is an English speaking country, and don't think it would be to expensive to live there.

Another nice place to live with an expat community is Boquete in Panama. You can get a big house with a nice view, and everything is cheap. Medical capabilities aren't too shabby either, because of the English-speaking community. It is kind of a Florida type place for old retirees though. Probably not what the OP is looking for.

If you want to 'disappear', moving to a rural location won't necessarily provide the anonymity that you might be seeking. If you want to relocate without being found, I would consider reading up on establishing a new (legal) identity. Some books at Paladin Press here:

Here's an option if you're interested in relocating somewhere remote but beautiful -- and living rent-free with or without additional compensation: http://www.caretaker.org/ $30 gets you a one-year subscription and online access to house-sitting opportunities in the US and over 18 other countries.

Get a giant loan then disappear to Australia with the funds... if you hide yourself well enough, I don't think it would be worth the creditor's time, money, or hassle with international law to go looking for you. You'd never be able to have a credit card or own property in the US again, though.
