Monterey -- what to do? where to eat? etc.

I'll be in Monterey Tue-Sat for a conference. I'll have a few half-days free and I'd like to check the place out. Any recommendations? I will not have a car and have no desire to rent one. I'll be staying at the Hyatt on the Del Monte Golf Course (and I do not golf).

I was thinking of renting a bike and checking out the town that way one day. I understand there's a trail that runs along the water between Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf. And well beyond there, I guess. Plus there's the Aquarium, which is supposed to be great. And, hey, I just discovered an antiques mall along the trail, so that's cool.

Also, does anyone have any restaurant recommendations? The weather is supposed to be nice and mild (60s and sun) so that widens my dining options (can't bear some foods in real hot humid weather and I've been dying for cassoulet (sp?)).

thanks,
b

Aquarium is fantastic. One of the great things in CA. 17 Mile Drive is, perhaps, the prettiest scenery in the United States. Have a drink at the Lodge at Pebble Beach. Wonderful view. Marinus restaurant is fabulous, but expensive and a better place for a romantic dinner than something with conference people. I don't like the towns that much. They are really, really touristy.

i just got back from there. best thing i did was rent a kayak and go out on the bay ... amazing number of otters, sea lions and harbor seals right there. There is a good kayak place that does a guided tour, too. Just north of Monterey is Moss Landing, cool old antiques (and, also, great kayaking/birdwatching). for a big deal meal, marinus is pretty much it. i've been a fan of cal stamenov for many years. great cook. for touristy stuff, it's also fun to go to fisherman's wharf and eat squid salad and clam chowder (salad is great chowder is not as much). another really great thing to do in Montery is head south toward big sur. right before you get there, there's a national seashore called Point Lobos that's absolutely amazing. oh, and of course the aquarium, probably the best in the US. be sure to check out the deepwater tank ... they're in the process of getting it ready for some work, but there's this amazing big eye tuna that's about the size of a volkswagen.
