I have a few suits that are 36R, 29 inches from collar to bottom. I feel that it's a little too short, and 38R are too big for me. All I am wondering is if a tailor can make the suit about 1 - 2 inches longer for me?
You can make the jacket about 3/4" longer if you use a skilled tailor. There are variables so this is not a 100% guarantee. If you need an inch more length, you should be buying longs. It will usually be an inch or so longer. Differs by maker as to how much longer a long is than a regular.
I'm going to learn something, I fear. Do you mean letting down the sleeve and body hems?
I feel that it's a little too short, and 38R are too big for me.
So buy suits that are 36L, simple.
