Mercedes - Full Size Video Game

Finally, it seems video game technology has merged into the world of full sized automobiles. The 600 appears normal . . .

until . . .

A Mercedes Benz with a joystick rather than a steering wheel.

I've never liked that slanting grille of recent Mercedes; you used to drive with the Mercedes Star completey centered in the line of vision. And those pock-mark wheels are distracting. They remind me of the heavy telephone dial wheels of the fourth generation Alfa Romeos.

The center placement of the joystick allows your co-pilot to take over in a pinch.

This is an old prototype from 1996.

Car companies have been dicking around with control configurations other than steering wheel and peddles for a long time. They just never implement them. People like their steering wheel and don't particulary have any desire to use a joystick or even an F1 style wheel with hand grips and buttons instead of a big round thing. Tough those that want an F1 style wheel can get them, and if you really wanted to control your car with a joystick I'm sure you could get it modified to do so without outlaying too much cash.

Why do they have it where you have to drive and manipulate all the controls with the same hand? Is there something important the left hand is supposed to be doing over there?

I just noticed that there is another joystick on the driver's side door.

That's for missile launchers and machine guns.
