2022 World Cup .. in 3D?

Japan's bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup includes an initiative called Universal Fan Fest, a $6 billion plan to treat fans around the world to live 3-D telecasts of tournament matches. Four hundred stadiums in 208 countries would provide some 360 million people with live 3-D feeds of games played in Japan, where each game would be captured from 360 degrees by 200 HD cameras.

But if the technology has come far enough along by that point, Japan wants to actually project each match onto fields in other nations hologram-style, giving fans the illusion of actually seeing the game live. And just to add a tint of green to the energy-hungry scheme, part of the power for all the necessary equipment would be harvested from the fans themselves as they rock the bleachers by cheering and stomping their feet, as well as from solar arrays.

Greatest sporting event ever?

Yes, and the amazing thing is, Japan could really do it.

That would be amazing.

No way Japan gets it in 2022, but it would be an incredible experience for sure. Another reason why Japan is the best thing ever.

I thought the same thing at first, but now I'm not so sure. I know it seems unlikely, but with the newer emphasis on continental rotation, who else in the region could be a better host? If the U.S. gets it in '18 or '22, then it could go back to England or Spain in the other, but there's gonna be an Asian or Oceania host in there somewhere right after.

Why would they give it to Japan again? Why not something else in the region like Aussie/NZ or China (lol)?

I don't think NZ can afford it and I haven't heard if Australia has even tried for it. China is probably not desirable because of the low quality of cities outside Shanghai, Beijing, and a couple regional cities. I think this year's version is one of the few occasions where a WC has or will be held in a country for political reasons above monetary reasons. South Africa isn't expected to make FIFA much money. If Japan's bid is good enough, they'll get it for the same reason that Mexico City will never put together a better bid than Chicago, LA, Toronto, or New York for the Olympics.
