Android phone recommendations/discussion? - Page 55

I just got my Galaxy Nexus...it's tough to do without some of the apps I was used to that aren't yet compatible with ICS. Swype is the one I'm missing the most.

Swype isn't compatible with ICS? geez. I was a hardcore Swype user, but I've been weening myself off lately since I recently got a phone with a 4.3 in screen.

Some live wallpapers induce much more lag than others. For example, the photon beam one or w/e it's called renders very little lag, if any. The ones with the colorful pixels and dots flying around cause my phone to lag noticeably.

I've only ever actually used the live wallpapers that came with CM7, which is thngs like animated grass, random moving lines and similar. I can't see any noticeable lag when they're enabled.

I'm somewhat suspicious of the permissions in many third-party live wallpapers. like internet access and personal information. Why would wallpaper need internet access, unless it was spying and phoning home.

Woo. Finally figured out how to activate the phone. It's very different from my iPhone and will take some getting used to. I abandoned my unlimited data plan from AT&T and am on 4GB now with Verizon. I really need to watch my data usage... 1 hour of Google Music on 4g used 550 mb!!!

People with the nexus: purchase the extended battery from Verizon. It's only a meager bump to 2100 but it's well worth the price. Im not sure if they're still running the 50% off deal..

It adds a bit more weight and ever so slightly more bulk, but in a better way. I think the nexus with the original battery is a bit too thin and light. The extended battery has only pros and absolutely zero of the cons that are associated with traditional extended batteries.

I can now EASILY get through a full day with full brightness and wifi/4g.

I just ordered a GNex during the Leap Day sale along with the extended battery. Came out to $225 total for an upgrade.

The amazon price is only for a NEW contract on a single line plan. If it's an upgrade with a family plan then the price jacks up a lot.

Had a Galaxy Note for a while now and it's been good. Had a problem with reboot after usb transfers but that was probably due to an old class 4 microSD card (had some bad blocks on scanning). Now using a new Samsung 32G class 10 card and it seems to be fine, don't know what to do with all the storage now smile.gif As an aside, I'm sort of waiting on the Asus Transformer Infinity - wondering if I should go and get the Prime instead. Sold my Macbook air (11") which wasn't really doing it as a computer for working on, and isn't as good a device for reading/ browsing/ casual games as a tablet.

There doesn't seem to be a huge difference between the Prime and the Infinity from what I've seen. I spoke to Asus directly recently and they said the Prime will become their mid-range Transformer, the 300 series is going for the low end while the Infinity (aka 700 series) is the new top dog, but looking at the spec sheet it's not vastly improved.

To be honest anything running a Tegra 3 on Android 4.0 with 1GB + of RAM is going to be pretty rapid unless it's really clogged down with bloatware and an inefficient UI - not something Asus are prone to doing.

If you're a fan of the Note and are interested in Transformer-style stuff it might be worth waiting for the Asus Padfone though - it's a phone, tablet and laptop all in one with a stylus which also acts as a handset so you can answer incoming calls while the hardware is still docked.

I had the Note for a little while and loved it, great device, wouldn't want it as my main phone though it's more of a PDA or a highly portable tablet. Screen is great, camera is great, note taking ability is cool. Was a bit choppy from time to time but I'm sure that's something Samsung will patch.

Yes, I'm aware that the Infinity doesn't change that much specwise - however to me, the better resolution is something worth waiting for to me as I hope to do the occasional bit of work (word processing) on it now and again, plus the supposed tweaks to GPS and wifi would be welcome. In the end, I'm in no real hurry so I can wait, i guess. The padfone sounds interesting but I'm not looking to change my phone at present, the Note is fine for me.

That seriously blows. Even though there is a small chance I'll ditch my iPhone 4 for the HTC One XL, I was at least thinking I could upload my music collection to Google Music and not fret about the lack of onboard storage. With my 2 GB monthly data plan, apparently that is not the case.

Hey, people who use the Galaxy Nexus, how do you like it? I'm probably going to wait to see what the next iPhone brings to the table, but I just messed around with a Nexus at Verizon and loved it. Stock ICS looks so tight.

What are people using that are on Verizon 4G with android? Seems like the phone to beat is the DROID razr maxx, if only from a cursory internet search. I'm looking for something that's not dinner plate sized, but it seems like everything's going that route (~4.3" screen) This is a second phone for me (have a Blackberry for work) so I'd love to minimize what I'm carrying.

Thanks in advance.

I've had the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 for the past couple years and recently switched over to the Nexus in December.

To be honest, it was a big change in terms of interface and whatnot, but I'm getting used to it. The phone itself is pretty buggy sometimes and not as refined as the iPhones. Also, the battery life is atrocious. Like, abysmal.

If it weren't for the 4G and big screen, I'd probably have run back to my old iPhone by now.

At this point, though, I'll probably end up getting the next iPhone.

Another thing that's REALLY irking me is that the Nexus is supposed to be Google's flagship phone -- thus, it should be getting updates first, and fast. But ever since that update that came out in December after its release, there has not been a single update to address any issues/bugs for the LTE Nexus. The GSM version already has 4.0.4 I think, but we still haven't gotten anything. There were promises of 4.0.3 coming out in March to address signal issues and whatnot, and it's already May and nothing has happened.

If you've played around with it in the store and absolutely like it, then you should get it. If all you've done is tinkered around with it for a couple minutes and think it looks nifty and pretty, then really try it out. If you're a heavy user, do expect to go through data fast and do not expect your battery to last a day.

Thanks for this. Yeah, the battery life concerns me. I also am not crazy about signing a two year contract on a phone that is a (little) long in the tooth.

I actually came up with another idea. I'm on contract with AT&T until July. I could purchase an unlocked GSM Nexus off Amazon and sell my iP4. It's not LTE but it is HSPA+ and from my understanding it drains the battery less than the LTE model. I could use this Nexus until October (without needed to extend my contract for the Nexus) and then see what the next iPhone and Nexus have to offer.

We shall see.

Edit: A story just popped up on The Verge that Google is selling the Nexus (unlocked GSM) for $400. Very interesting.
