Best Tea & Dessert Places in NYC Recommendations

Hi Guys

So I would really like to know some of the best places in NYC to have proper (no teabags please) English tea in afternoon or late evenings. The quality of tea itself is first and then a distant 2nd can be service, decor or whatever. Price does not matter as long as it is good! Well, I take that back actually I would not like to pay more than $40-50 per person for tea lol!

I have heard mixed things about Astor Place in St. Regis or Palm Court at Plaza. Anyone can elaborate please? Are there better places for tea in NYC?

Finally, good ol' chocolate desserts! Which restaurant has the best chocolate dessert menu? Best desserts and good selections? On easy going days I have recently tried some financier stuff (wall street area) and found them to my liking. The problem is that they are often out of choices by 4pm and I need some place for evenings.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

PS. I am not looking for a one stop place for nice tea and desserts but if it can happen then great!

it's pretty feminine inside, but Alice's Tea Cup seems to have a great brew. Great scones, too.

The best formal high tea is at Lady Mendl's. They have everything you seek. Their signature multilayer cake is legendary. http://www.innatirving.com/menus/din...ourse-menu.asp

my girlfriend's south african parents love Tea and Sympathy. It's a small cozy place with a nice cozy feel and quite the selection of teas and food to consume with your tea. It isn't formal, but it has its charm.

I heard good things about Tea and Sympathy. Girlfriend has been meaning to go there for a while now. Whenever we walk by it's pretty packed.

She was disappointed by Alice's Tea Cup though...

Wanted to add that Sweet Revenge is a great place to have some tasty and rich cupcakes with beer or wine. It's cute and can be intimate.

T & S is good, but very casual. The best part is you can go next door for Smarties.

They sell lots of British chocolates at the deli at the NE corner of 83rd and Amsterdam (smarties, flake, malteasers, crunchie, wispa, various dairy milks, etc etc). Milano Market by Columbia also has a few on hand at any given time.

The problem though with imported British chocolates is that they lack the adhesives that prevent American chocolate from melting (and also make them taste like shit) and therefore the chocolates melt and harden repeatedly on the journey over.
