Should you tip the guy who details your car?

I'm not one of those people who drives around with a landfill in their backseat. There are some stains on the interior carpet that need to be removed, but nothing too serious. I'd also like the headliner done. I can understand tipping if you make them deal with a few years worth of garbage, etc., but what if that isn't the case?

I don't think it's necessary. Not every service sector job requires tipping.

Yeah but aren't like 60% of the jobs in Atlanta in the car detailing sector?

+1,

When I drop my car off to be cleaned, I usually give the guy cleaning it a little extra.

not necessary, but I find tipping someone you regularly patronize will almost always be good for you.

I find that tipping helps you get special favors and treatment on subsequent visits.

Why wouldn't you? When you get your car washed, you don't give a couple of bucks to the guy who dries your car? If you get a $10 wash and tip $2 or $3 bucks, just multiply that by the cost of the detail. If you're not feeling generous, will $5 kill you? If you're in a position that $5 is a lot, then you don't have to.

When I see the car wash guy spending 20 minutes making sure my car is spotless and is working hard under the beating sun while I kick up my shoes and read a magazine, I'm cool with giving $4-5 bucks, even if the wash itself is $15. It's not a ton, but I'm sure they appreciate it. Not only do they save me time, they do a way better job than I would myself.

YES, you should tip the guy who details your car. In High School I used to detail cars, so I know how it feels to clean someone else's shit, then feel like they just expect you to do an amazing job. Tip them a little before and after if you truly want a nice detailing job. Also, don't give me that "Well its their job expectation, so they should do a quality detailing job and not expect a tip" If that was the case, there would be no bonuses or commission positions. The only place I've ever heard of no tipping is Japan.

First off, I would never pay anyone to detail my car. I do it just fine myself. If I did get a detailer, I don't know why someone would be expected to tip. And trust me, I'm not a stingy tipper. And yes, you should be expected to do a good job without a tip. Have a little pride in your work. I've worked in health care for the past 9 years. I have never received a bonus and haven't gotten a raise in two years due to financial cutbacks by the hospital, so I'm not going to feel sympathy if you don't get a tip from detailing a car.
