Unless you find one with all the big money work done that has been babied it's whole life you will run into a lot of little things with VW's. The person i bought my jetta from (a woman) did absolutely zero maintenance to it. So i got stuck with several thousand in repairs (timing chain, clutch, water pump, A/C, tires, springs and shocks, brakes), but I haven't had any real trouble with it. The key to VW is finding an owner who is a VW enthusiast and finding a good shop that does cheap work.
VW's do well if they are properly maintained on time...they are not good cars for people who want to push the limits on their scheduled service visits.
If it has had all of its service on time and doesn't have any impending "big ticket" scheduled service, you should be alright.
That being said...I never was a huge fan of that generation passat. Get a jetta or a civic or an accord or a camry and be done with it.
