Need some car advice

Now that I'm a grownup I'll need a vehicle. I haven't owned a car since I transferred colleges and haven't thought much about it until now. Here's what I'm looking for: 1.) Really good gas mileage. 2.) Sedan or coupe. 3.) Highest possible reliability. 4.) Looking to spend under $10,000. Ask me questions if necessary. Thanks!

I have the perfect car for you: A Lotus Elise or a Honda S2000. They are both great cars and you could also take them to the track.

Both are good choices, but I would honestly consider adding a Beefeater Limited Slip Differential to get the most of it.

....all jokes aside, you should honestly take a look at a pre-owned Civic.

Well, I can't do much for 1) if better than 30mpg is what you're after, but.... My father bought an '01 Grand Am GT new in 2001. He now has 243,000 miles on it, with very limited servicing beyond standard maintenance, which is rigorously kept up. Needing something reliable myself, I bought one a year and change ago for < $5,000.00, with 70k miles, and have only put $500 into it over 20k miles. You can get newer ones with the cool hood scoops, too. If you do look at them, only bother with the GTs, for one good reason -- four wheel disks. I get about 28mpg highway, forget what it is in the city/combined. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e&rdpage=thumb ~ H

Thanks for the suggestions guys. What would insurance be like for a single 22 year old? I've always been on my parents' plan. Are there ballpark numbers?

One car that's pretty reliable is the Pontiac G6. And thanks to good old Pontiac depreciation you can pick a used 06-07 one for dirt cheap. They come as either a 4 banger or a V6.

Yaris or Civic. I have a Yaris, it literally gets ~40 miles/gallon. Pretty nimble ride too.

Civic likely. Do Honda Fits get under 10k yet?

I had a Nissan Versa as a rental and really liked its handling and mpg for what it was.

Will vary widely with numerous factors such as: driving record, location, amount driven, type of car, coverage desired, deductable, etc.

A friend of mine just got a Pontiac G6. Wouldn't be my first choice, but on closer inspection they seem to be fine for the money.

What about early 00s Volkswagen Passats? One of my dad's friends is selling his '02 Passat (loaded), 96K miles, really nice shape. And only $5000. Is maintenance $$$$ on VWs?

You will get mixed reviews.

I suggest you google 'window regulators' and 'vw' together before you buy a Passat, Jetta, or Golf from that time period.
