Active/outdoor/tech clothing fashion design

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if any one had any knowledge about what it takes to design outdoor clothing. is it as simple as saying, "I want my goretex jacket to look like this" and sending it off to a factory to be made with taped seams and waterproof zippers? Seems like there are so many different fabrics and technology that goes into producing these clothes, is there a fashion school for it? or rather a field of study within a fashion school?

I live in boulder and see all this outdoor clothing and was just wondering how does one go about doing it?

read an article on white mountaineering and that designer learned from working at CDG i think, but any info would be cool.

Just buy Arc'Teryx Veilance, it'll be cheaper You could try convincing Dismal to make something similar, but most factories are going to want some kind of a commitment to a batch order before even fashioning a sample (and that's assuming you can find a decent/reputable factory in Asia, I'd assume American and European factories would laugh in your face unless you were willing to drop many thousands on a bulk order)

The best way is to do design or fashion studies and to get an internship in an outdoor company.

Patagonia has a good internship program, I did a 3 month internship there back in 96. Unless you're in fashion school most companies will not accept you. Technical clothing with all of the construction facets you mentioned are not necessarily expensive to produce when you break down the cost per garment but the minimums are high, 1000 pieces per color with a Chinese factory at a cost of around $30-$40 Landed Duty Paid. If you have a Japanese hook up you can produce smaller quantities but then the prices go sky high, White Mountaineering and Visvim as an example.
