First day work/orientation wear?

Hey,

I am going to start my internship soon. And there will probably an orientation on the first day, and I am wondering what should I wear?

It's finance industry, and I am still in college.

I think suit and tie is probably a must. I have a navy, charcoal and black suit.

Accessorywise, I am not that sure.

Shall I wear a tie bar? a watch? pocket square? etc?

Thanks a lot!

Navy or charcoal suit, no tie bar, watch is fine if it isn't the size of a small candy bar, pocket square is good. Look conservative and clean, not a dandy, not a slob.

For the first day, I would say go a little conservative and wear the black suit, white or blue shirt and tie of your choice. I would stay away from the tie bar and wear a nice, professional watch. Also, make sure you have the proper tools of the trade - decent pens, legal pad with leather holder and briefcase/laptop bag.

Most importantly, SHOES! Make sure they're clean and shining bright.

I would go with either the navy or charcoal suit. I've noticed a lot of people on SF are not fond of plain black suits as they feel they make a statement that is too strong. I'm not one who shares this view but, in the interest of being conservative, I'd probably go with the navy.

I would say no to the tie bar and the pocket square and yes to the watch. I would also go with a plane white shirt for the first day.

Good luck...let us know how it goes.

PS- As the proud owner of a watch the size of a small candy bar, I will state for the record that I happen to like this style. However, the other poster is probably correct that it would not be the best choice for the first day of work in a conservative workplace.

For goodness' sake.....don't wear a pocket square. A shirt and tie is fine. A pocket square will make you look like you're headed to prom, regardless of what the forum freaks say.

I disagree a simple tv-fold white linen square doesn't look like you are off to your prom. If you have something in a nice conserative complementary colour that would work too.

I would go with the navy suit, white shirt, white pocket square (TV fold), black belt and captoes. The pocket square shows that you took some consideration into what you wore, but the black leather is all business.

These are just my initial thoughts, however, and I am still learning the ways of traditional mens clothing, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Another vote for skipping the pocket square. You'll like you've dressed up in your father's clothes, IMHO.

I saw one pocket square at my prom. Mine. Go ahead, search "prom" on Google Images. You'll see many groups of teenagers. Few pocket squares. And if clothes fit, they never look inherited.

Did the company give you a description? Im starting my internship next week too and I was given the business casual description but I will still be there the first day in a navy suit dressed to impress. I also appreciate the advice of everyone in the thread since my internship is in the finance industry too.

OP- Good luck in your internship! Are you doing valuation or consulting?

Personally, I always wear a tiebar. Go with your charcoal suit, white shirt, white square (squared, nothing fancy), black shoes & belt, and an understated tie. Wear your favorite watch. Good luck with your internship.
