Not Hired Because of Music Preference

I had an interview last week (the second interview, I was one of two finalists). The Program Manager called me to tell me I didn't get the job, and then asked if I could meet with him anyways. When we met, he told me that the reason they didn't hire me was because, when they asked about my music taste, I said I like "rock and punk rock." He said the fact that I like punk rock made them think I have a "dark side" so they hired the other guy. He said I'm "brilliant" and that "in many ways, [i] answered the questions better than the other applicant."

What the hell?

Oh, and by the way, the job has absolutely nothing to do with music...it's a psychology gig.

Guy probably got his assed kicked by punks when he was younger or... maybe recently. What a bitch.

Fuck that guy. That would piss me off to no end. On the other hand, I probably would lie if asked that question in an interview. Well, not lie, but just be vague. I've been listening to a lot of punk and hardcore lately, but I would say that "I like a little bit of everything, from punk rock to classical." You're still telling the truth, but this way they don't picture you cutting yourself with razor blades at CBGB's.

Yes. This is the answer to everything. Sue as often as you can. Don't just move on and deal with your problems.

It sucks, OP, but there's not much you can do about it. Incidentally, what sort of "psychology gig" is it? Do they do analyses of job candidates based upon their preferences in various genres of media? Maybe they've figured out something about you that you didn't know about yourself!

At my company, we are equal opportunity employers and do not discriminate on the basis of an individual's race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, or musical preference.

Ehh you probably listen to shitty pop punk or that metalcore shit that's popular. Dude probably didn't hire you because he could tell you were a poser.

I predict that I'm going to have a lot of fun when they start asking that.

"Oh metal, hardcore, some punk rock. Mostly straight edge stuff though."
"Straight edge...like the gangs?"

What kind of music does the other guy like, Lacy Goga?

Ha!

The position was Substance Abuse Clinician. The thing is, these dumbass psychologists/social workers start to think they have some special, advanced power of perception -- that they have a unique and awesome ability to instantly access the inner workings of another's mind, and therefore they start acting just like the prejudiced fools they think they are so much smarter than.
