Where did you meet your wife/gf/SO? - Page 4

I met my future wife at the swimming pool at the apartment complex I was living at in Chicago. We started talking about food and wine because she was helping to open Bin 36 at the time. She didn't have anyone to go out with her to eat, drink, and party, and I severely needed a new realm for my life - we thus hit it off because of our mutual lacuna-filling.

We were having fun together for a month, month and a half, before getting romantically involved. The night this happened was when we went to a Public Enemy concert at House of Blues. A bunch of her friends and a bunch of my friends had a private balcony - and I noticed this bald guy slinking in and out of ours and others' private boxes. After the concert, that same guy came up to her and said, despite the fact that I was standing right there, "Hey, you wanna go backstage and party with Flavor Flav?" She said, "No, I'm going to get a burger and go home with this guy", pointing to me. That's when I knew I found the woman I was going to marry.

Was she really on the opening team at Bin 36? That's pretty badass. Nice place. Their place right across from the HoB and the wine bar in bucktown.

Fo' real. That was in the late summer/fall of 1999. It's remarkable how different the restaurant/bar culture is in Chicago versus San Francisco. In Chicago, we would never get a bill for our dinners because she was in the industry - people in that industry treated each other really well. In San Francisco, you get nothing. There's a richness to the restaurant culture and a different level of professionalism in Chicago compared to San Francisco.

You guys should just come on back then. For instance, if you came into my restaurant, you'd never pay a dime.
Although I think there is still some generosity on the part of SF types. Name-dropping Cyrus got me a LOT of free shit inside of the city and in wine country in general. Carrying around a Cyrus business card to prove it typically made me the hero of the night with my friends. Hell, Matt and Roikins took me to dinner at Coi and basically said "this is Kyle, he is in the industry and leaving SF, bring him something nice" and the guy poured me a Madeira from 1834, comped it, and IIRC, comped us two others from the early 1900s, which certainly were not cheap drinks.
Personally, I've experienced very little of that in Chicago. But then again, I don't really go out to restaurants and talk about it, and I'm also not at one of the most famous restaurants in the area, which I'm sure would make a difference.

I met my wife in high school.

She was waiting for her mom to pick her up. She was a senior, and I was a freshman. It was a very impersonal exchange. I think a friend and I were waiting for the cafeteria to open and she told me she liked my pants ( khaki bell-bottoms) and I got really embarassed in that charlie brown/little red haired girl way.

I clammed up, and then eventually managed to say something about her glasses I think.

My serious gf's: 1. Met in university, her sorority sister was dating a fraternity brother. 2. Drunk on a bus back to university from downtown, we sang "You've lost that loving feeling" to her and a friend 3. Via an online fashion forum 4. At a dive bar, had a discussion about how I don't believe in dinasours. 5. We worked together.

^True story www.honestforum.com It was a slow sunday night, they had a chat, she then called me on the phone. Came to visit me a number of times, but in the end Florida - British Columbia was too much distance.
