Quick Weight Training Query

I've religiously hit the gym for the past 18 months and built up about 10 pounds of muscle and am very happy with how I look. Lately (the past month and a half or so) with time constraints (mostly with hockey games) I'm lucky to hit the gym once a week. I have, however, kept up my running routine and may have even increased it as its easier for me to find time to run and/or play hockey than play hockey and lift.

Anyway, my question is how will this effect my physique? Will the mass I've built remain or will it decrease? I'll always mix in some pushups crunches and ab routine with stretches when I run so it won't be all cardio, but what can I expect?

One of the key principles of weight training is reversibility. If you don't use it, you lose it, to varying degrees.

Eason is right but if you can eat enough protein, you can at least slow the rate of loss. If you aren't eating above maintenance, then you'll also get more loss (and assuming you are doing a lot of cardio, this is going to be happening). Push-ups and abs don't work a whole lot. If you're pressed for time, at least try to work in some weighted squats/deadlift, bench press, military press, and rows. That'll at least keep your basic shape and doesn't take long at all.

always time to get to the gym. I don't get this concept of not having time. cut out something else.

+1. It's 3 hours a week. There's usually a way you can find time.

I have two kids under two at home, plus a hockey game twice a week that physically exhausts me. I'm in bed by 9 most nights and up at 5:30AM...help get the kids ready, drop the kids at day care, get to work by 7:30, get home from work by 4, go pick up the kids from day care, feed them, bathe them, put them to bed. My wife is here too but its a LOT of work and a LOT of time. The days I have hockey its even more compressed. Wait till you whipper snappers have a family...

i run a business, 3 kids, bball twice a week. coach 3 bball teams. i will not give up the gym for anything, which is probably why the only buddy I hang with on the regular is my gym partner.

this is me. I mean if it was just the " will not give up the gym for anything, which is probably why the only buddy I hang with on the regular is my gym partner" part. Also I finish my day at 11pm by the time I get home from the gym and I wake up around 5-6. I can understand you a bit NYR but if there's a gym near where you live, even 30 minutes is enough time for core maintenance.

Kunk, if you weren't before, you are now, my hero. My old ass body needs the sleep, and right now, I'd rather not give up the running so much...maybe once the weather isn't so nice, I'll find myself in there more often. I suppose I can eliminate something to get in there for some core stuff in the summer (maybe after a run or before) at least three times a week for 30 minutes.

If the muscle is that important to you, I would give up the running. You're getting some pretty serious cardio in your hockey and both hit your legs. Even a couple of half hour "weight sessions" a week will maintain what you have as long as you hit it heavy and don't fart around with isolation exercises.

^if you're a runner, nothing i can say will stop you but hockey probably provides plenty of cardio and you might try farmer's walks or tabatas in the gym for cv health-all the more reason to go there in the first place.

my wife used to bust my balls about going to the gym every night and while i am no mr.olympia, when she looks around and sees the other dads my age at school, she shuts the hell up and asks me what time i am going to the gym and if i will need a shake prepared for when i get home. :P

Every person knows his own constraints, so I would hate to prescribe a solution to anyone or, perish the thought, condescend to them about their fitness routines. However, one has to find the time for important things. There are only 24 hours in the day and something must drop off the plate, and if it is the gym, so be it. But if the gym is sufficiently important, you have to carve out time for it. BTW, I am 43. Two kids and a very demanding job as a researcher in an R&D lab as well. I sleep for 6 hours a night and find time for just about everything that I am interested in right now. My fitness schedule these days: Monday AM: Swim Monday PM: Run Tuesday: Gym - Max strength Wednesday: Gym - GPP/Core Thursday AM: Swim Thursday PM: Run Friday: Gym - Explosive Strength Saturday AM: Swim Intervals Saturday PM: Run Intervals/Core Sun: Rest If I can do it at 43 with lousy genetics, anyone can. Old age is an excuse. Not finding time is an excuse. Not going all out and making every second of your workout time count is an excuse. It's your time. Use it wisely.

Basically the first answer has helped me prioritize in my head. I need to find time for the gym at least 3 times a week. I love the running, and needless to say love my kids more than all of it, so I'll just have to do a better job of planning the time during the work week (as my weekends are a little easier). Thanks for the responses.

Do you have to do the work in the gym? One armed pushups, pullups, levers, planche pushups, pistol squats, hand stand pushups (not sure what the proper name for this is) all provide a pretty respectable amount of resistance with the convenience of not need anything more than a door (except for the levers).
