how old are you? how old are your kids? i know when my daughter went away to college, it was a really hard transition ... someone who has been a part of your life for 18 years suddenly is gone. On the other hand, they're gone. As my wife said after we drove her to school: "I cried all the way up and laughed all the way back."

Well I can only refer to my own experiences. In my family you're encouraged to do your own thing and be away from home even at a young age.

Whenever I saw reality shows it always struck me as very weird about how excited someone would be to see someone from "home" after only like 2 weeks.

i hardly think we were helicopter parents. my daughter lived in Italy for the summer between her junior and senior years in high school. leaving home for college was different. maybe we're just sentimental.

I honestly might just be jealous in some weird way. My parents would always make fun of parents who would be like "What!!! You're sending your kid away all summer!?!?!?!" and they'd laugh at parents who would have long, drawn out tearful goodbyes over relatively insignificant periods of separation between child/parents. I always was sent everywhere alone... I went to college by myself, I think my dad visited like once. Never felt unloved or slighted. It must be a cultural difference.

Definitely yes. Parents can expect that their teens will struggle against the idea of going to a boarding school because of the many misconception about what goes on inside these boarding schools. However, boarding schools for struggling teenagers have been proven to provide positive results for many families all over the world.

Old thread; nonetheless, my sibling and I routinely went away for the entire summer when we were growing up, and on a several of those occasions traveled alone. We were quite adventurous and independent. No long and teary goodbyes when we went off to college.
