I always felt this is the managers way of telling the umpire that his calls are so bad you may as well just cover the plate because your not looking at it(to determine balls & strikes). It could also be an excuse to watch the ump pull out that cute little brush they have to clean off the plate.
I believe he had a job with Arizona at one time...I don't think he hung on too long there. I seem to remember something like that.

Yes, this is true. I remember Bachman did something, but I think it was a bit more serious i.e. beat his wife or something like that. Baseball is so hypocritical.
