Altering Pants - How far can you go?

Hi, I have a suit seperate jacket/pants combo I can get for really cheap. The only problem is that I'm a EU48 for pants and jackets, and while the jacket is the right size, the pants are an EU52. I assume altering the pants should be successful, but I don't know. What do you all think? It's about a 2-3 inch alteration. Are there any problems associated with altering pants to that degree?

Note: This may or may not be a dumb question.

Generally, it begins to get dicey after 2 inches.

As Alex(atailor) has explained, to take the waist in more than a few inches adjustments must be made at both the rear and side seams.

any more than 2" and you are have to do what is called recutting the pant...it will change the rise thigh etc....

can be done is pretty pricey today and only to trusted to a tailor who has proven his talents. Definatley not a dry cleaner job or a mall based shop task.
