Where to stay in Europe? (small-timer edition)

I'm looking for recommendations on good places for extended stays in Europe (up to three months in each country, so I don't need to bother with long-term visas). The plan is to live in the South during the winter and head up North during the summer. I'm looking to stay in short-term apartments, not hostels.

Ideal city requirements:
- Total monthly cost for rent/Internet/groceries/etc. less than $2000/month
- Reliable high-speed Internet available
- Big enough town to have have a grocery store and several restaurants/pubs/etc. within walking distance of my apartment (no little villages of 50 people)
- No car required to get around
- Something of interest (beach, museums, etc.)
- Reasonably safe

Thanks

Do a little research first.

"Up to three months" means less than three months. Do a little reading first.

Schengen zone laws apply to ALL its member states, tard. You can't hop from one to the next every three months. But go anyway, it will be amusing to see you stopped at the border after 3 months and kicked out.

holymadness is technically correct, but anecdotally there is little chance of getting caught assuminrg out hug you dont need a visa to enter Schengen. I've met a lot of people who have hung out for over a year and not had issues.

Well, "tard", I don't plan on staying in Europe the whole year. If you actually read my original post, you'd see that I plan on staying in Southern Europe in the winter and Northern Europe in the summer. Hmmm... that sounds like 90 days out of every 180 days. Rumor has it that there are a few other countries outside of Europe.

But thanks for being so helpful.

messina close to various interestign sites in etna, not a large city but not small beaches nearby etc or you could do reggio calabria jsut across the strate. no car really needed for either but without a vehcle you would be better off in messina. it is safe nad as lng as you are reasonabel about your needs you could proabably do rent food elctricy etc for about 1000 euros a month.

I am not up to date on the details of your little joyride. Frankly I don't care. Based on what you posted it was more reasonable to assume you were planning to shift from one country to the next rather than go home for 90 days in spring and autumn, especially since you live in America, but whatever. I am still not convinced this wasn't your intention. You posted an error concerning visas, which I corrected. You took that as an opportunity to insult my reading ability rather than correct your mistake, the logic of which still escapes me. Normally I wouldn't care but I work at an embassy and it is inevitably smug little pricks like you that come groveling to us after being nicked by the police, explaining that your visa expired and you now need our help to be repatriated. People like you make work for people like me. It is tiring to be constantly confronted by belligerent types who are too lazy to inform themselves of the rules before leaving home, or else think they're too special to have the rules apply to them.

So, shouldn't you be thanking him for giving you a job to do?

Maybe Istanbul/Berlin? Berlin is cheaper than most Americans think.

If only I were paid by the client. Sadly, this is more like thanking the photocopier for having a paper jam every day.
