Things to do in Atlanta

Hey Guys,

I'm going to be sent to a conference/training to Atlanta for three days next week. Myself and other interns have nights free and am looking to get a general idea of places to go and things to see. Mainly looking for restaurants and bars but am open to other suggestions.

Any help would be appreciated.

Bang some girls at the conference. That is my favorite thing to do at destination conferences. My success ratio is 100%. Although I had a lot of options.

Where in Atlanta will you be? If downtown, get out as soon as possible.

This is pretty much a pizza, hamburgers, fries and beer-drinking town.

Will need more info. Where are you staying? What do you like to do? The first question is kind of the most important. We're very spread out and we don't have a good public transportation system, so if you don't have a car--life will be difficult.

We are going to be staying at the Sheraton on Courtland St. NE. On google maps there is the Peachtree Center on the map about a block from the hotel, which I assume is a landmark site in the city.

Visit my alma mater, GSU, just be sure not to blink.

You're in a bit of a wasteland for stuff do in the immediate area. Walk up to Peachtree Street and there is a string of Hard Rock Cafe and other touristy places for the conventioneers. Essentially this is where you're staying.

There is Little Five Points (note: this is NOT "Five Points" which is also close but in downtown) and that isn't too far away. Tons of good places to go hang out and eat/drink. If you say Little Five, people will know what you're talking about and even if you say "Five Points" people will still assume you mean L5P. Just know there is a HUGE difference in case you decide to go walking around. To get to L5P you will really need a car or taxi. You could walk it but it is a hike and not that nice to talk to. When you get there I'd recommend the Porter or the Vortex. Also near there is Manuel's Tavern, one of my favorite places to hang out. A haunt of cops, journalists, Democrats, and political people for generations now.

The Highlands is another area for nightlife dining. A few very good restaurants there, Fritti has great pizza and North Highland Cigar Co. has a decent cigar selection and is just a really cool place to drink. Again. not walkable. The Highlands, predominantly, caters to a Fratty type of crowd, so if it isn't your thing, don't go there for nightlife but for food it is nice.

So that's pretty much your best bets. East Atlanta or Decatur are just past both those places but are good restaurant and nightlife spots. EA more for drinking Decatur more for restaurants. The hipsters hang out at EA and the Brickstore in Decatur is NOT to be missed if you like beer. Rated one of the top 10 beer bars in the world.

Anyway, any more questions PM me or poast here. If yo want recommendations when you're there I'd be happy to help.

Oh and because this is SF, Sid Mashburn's in Midtown West is a very SF approved store. It is next to four good restaurants; Bacchanalia (the city's best and most $$$$), JCT Kitchen for good neo-Southern, Figo for low key pasta, and Taqueria del Sol for cheap, low key tacos. Also check out Northside Tavern nearby for the best blues bar in the city.

That's downtown and you won't want to spend any evenings there. I work about five blocks from Peachtree Center, and there is jack shit to do downtown. You didn't say what you're interested in doing. Bars, clubs, dinner? If dinner, what kind of food and what's the per diem? Big 4? Edit: To add to the above, if you go to the Highlands, Fritti is great for dinner (isn't that more the Inman Park area?), but the main life in the highlands starts around Ponce and Highland and goes down to Virginia and Highland. If clubs are your thing, go to midtown.

Ed's post = pretty much everything I like to do in Atlanta.

I really like the Decatur area; if you make an evening of it, i'd recommend Leon's Full Service, Farm Burger, or maybe The Iberian Pig for food and the Marlay for drinks (if Brick Store is a little too crowded).

The Porter in L5P is also a fantastic gastropub/beer bar. I actually prefer it to Brick Store. Would recommend over Vortex.

I was just looking for a general idea of things to do. Yea it's with a big 4 and the per diem is like $56/ day which isnt bad I guess. Being from New York it sounds like peanuts but I assume it will go much farther in Atlanta.

Oh shit. Go to Bacchanalia then if you can. If you want something really REALLY off the beaten path, but with the best Southern food in Atlanta, go to Carver's Grocery. CALL BEFORE YOU GO. A) it isn't easy to get to and B) they aren't always open. Only for lunch. Warning though, if you go there for lunch you won't be hungry for dinner.

At night, Colonnade is my favorite for southern food. A few years ago they brought in a new chef who tried to modernize the menu a little. Some of the old favorites are gone but you can still get tomato aspic. Crowd is made up of about 60% old southern folks, and 30% really boring gay people, then everyone else. Really good shit.

Can give you some great BBQ reccs too if you want.

I figured as much as Deloitte, the radio station, and Uncle Ernie are all downtown. I think our interns started this past week.
