OK, as a Mini owner, I'm excited to see this go off.

Silliness. Who gets to set the track?

Pointless publicity stunt. Even if Mini could beat Ferrari in a race, it wouldn't really matter. Branding is everything.

I don't think this is pointless. If Mini shows that it can hold its own and that's dependent on who they choose to drive, it won't be about market share, just a similar excitement for less bucks. That's marketing genius.

I will admit that Mini does a wonderful job with their marketing.

Even this may prove to be good marketing, but let's be perfectly clear: it's good marketing to people who don't know a f*cking thing about cars or racing.

And I'm a fan of Mini, and not really a Porsche guy at all.

Not pointless at all. Actually it's a no-lose proposition for mini and is actually a really good branding tool. Mini fits with people who are a bit offbeat anyway. There's no way that Porsche will even respond to this and, in fact, the guys at Mini know that. It doesn't matter. They'll use it as a tool to get people thinking and talking about Mini anyway.

They'll have the event whether Porsche shows up or not and they'll make a big deal about Porsche chickening out and not racing them. It will all be in good fun and get them lots of press.

Not pointless at all. Good marketing.

I agree too that it's brilliant marketing and a win-win for Mini no matter what. BTW Porsche has responded somewhat tongue-in-cheek and if they had a sense of humor, they could really make something out of this, too.

For their part, Porsche is at least considering taking Mini up on its offer.

"Porsche has the most racing victories of any manufacturer out there "” 28,000 and counting "” maybe we should go for 28,001," Steve Janisse, Porsche's Media Relations Manager, told Jalopnik. "We just need to see what they're up to."

It was fun watching that little hyper mini take on the 993, but good lord was that exhaust note GRATING!

I liked the little "bring it on" video Mini NA put together. It was polished and I like how it was delivered; by a monotone guy who knows he's monotone and is having fun with it.

The way Mini's driver got existed after passing and started going off the line and skidding tells me that both of them are total noobs and this time the bigger Noob was driving Porsche.
The big white X on the Porsche also indicates he's a noob. The Mini's not too bad but the Porsche driver's all over the place.

Not an expected response from Porsche: polite but condescending.

Dear Jim,

Imagine our surprise to discover our former employee, now the head of Mini, has challenged us to a head-to-head race. As you surely know, Porsche has a long history of racing success, with more than 28,000 wins over the last 60 years. In our early days, we pitted ourselves against the giants, so we've been in your shoes.

But as you also know, Porsche doesn't race for fame, stunts or publicity. We race to challenge ourselves; we race to push sports car technology; we race to translate every win on the track to our cars on the road. If you need a reminder of our intent, please take a look at this short video:

While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we'll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces. We also invite you to any of the thousands of tracks around the world where Porsche owners compete each weekend.

Good luck with your race at Road Atlanta on June 21; we hope you enjoy the day.

Sincerely,
Detlev Von Platen
President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America

win/win advertising for mini, so would say job well done.

Doesn't really serve any purpose to Porsche to go and race MINI.

In a real race Porsche would bitch slap MINI. Unless MINI is using this to introduce an AWD turbo monster MINI or a Off Road MINI to race a 911 then they are not going to win.

Closet they can come is in Autox but even there the MINI would lose. But again if they used this to introduce a AWD MINI then they would have a chance.

The mini is one of the only front wheel drive cars i'd ever personally buy. Coming from someone whos driven a lot of high performance cars, the mini surprised the hell out of me. The handling is ridiculous.
