How does this suit jacket fit me?

Hey guys, I'm new here. Looking for your opinions on how this suit jacket fits. I was at the mall and wasn't expecting to try any jackets on, but I found this "modern fit" jacket at Club Monaco and I thought I'd see how it fit (hence the t-shirt and jeans). The jacket is a 38 (regular I'm assuming, they didn't appear to have S or L sizes). I'm 6'0"-1" and 175lbs, with an athletic build. Sorry for the quality of the pics, they're from my iPhone: According to the rules I've read online, the sleeves are clearly too long (probably an inch and a bit?). I did the wall test and the shoulders seem to fit well. Yeah? It has to be too short (I am wearing low-rise jeans, but still), though, from the looks of it, even though it passes the test where I fit the length of the suit into the cup of my hand without the fabric bunching up? I think I have enough room in the chest, but I don't know if the waist looks good or is too bunchy? What do you guys think? I'm just learning so if the things I said in the previous paragraph are totally off then lemme know! Thanks.

From my point of view: Too short (a bit hard to tell with those trousers), button stance too high, sleeves too long, too tight at the chest - some pulling at the button.

Shoulders look fine.

Sleeves need to get shortened.

Pull up your pants next time so it doesn't make the jacket look so short. Your jeans are probably sagging down your butt.

Pulling is probably caused when you hold the camera up.

That's the major one - It looks completely ridiculous to have a button stance that high on a two button jacket.

Ok, at least I got the shoulders right (and knowing the sleeves are too long). And yeah, I know about the pants — like I said, didn't think I'd be trying on anything tonight.

I think IBJanky might be on the right track about the pulling. The right side of the jacket isn't pulling nearly as bad as the left, I'm thinking because of holding my phone.

I really just wanted to see if I was a 38 or had to go up to a 40, but I think a 40 would be too large, especially in the shoulders.

You'll get better advice from more seasoned posters, but here are my initial impressions.

The shoulders are cut too narrow, which makes your head appear larger than it is. Waist buttons seems too high, but others can speak better on that and that may just be a matter of preference. Jacket collar seems to be standing away. Looks like it's a too tight through the body causing the bunching around the mid-section. The sides of the suit jacket should flow more gracefully from the armholes to the waist; seems like too much bunching on sides, particularly for a modern fit suit. And it's too short.

What do you mean by the shoulders being cut too narrow, Strawfut?

And would I be more of a 40 taken in than a 38, perhaps? I tried on this jacket mainly to assess my general size; I'm planning on buying some suits soon.

That's also my impression judging by the first image but the wide angle lens of the phone camera can cause a wrong impression. This issue looks a tad better in the other pics...

A lot of men make the mistake of buying too big.

Yes, you can buy 40 and take it in through the sides but . . . the problem will be thus: the jacket's armholes will be too low.

A jacket with low armholes prevents your arms from moving freely. That is what will happen if you buy a 40 and have it taken in.

If, on the other hand, you indeed do fit a 38, then just buy the 38 and save yourself some alteration money and save yourself some grief and discomfort, as well. The 38 will be a better fit for your body and will fit closeer to your body. All this means that the armholes will be cut higher because the entire jacket, including the armholes, will fit better against your body. It will fit like it was made just for you. A 40 taken in will look slightly too big (too wide) across the shoulders and you will be unable to move your arms about freely because the armholes are too low (i.e. too big/too deep) for you.

In summary, just buy your proper size. It seems to me, based on what I've read, you are a 38. Besides, wasn't there anyone in the store to help you? Where did you buy your suit? What brand is it?
