Having done large portions of the AT in the southern states it is easy to understand the unpredictability of storms like this. Forecasts are rarely accurate. My forecast was looking in the sky. Storms often appear out of nowhere, especially in the afternoon. It easy to be caught out in the open when a storm rolls in. Especially at a bald mountain like Max Patch. It's happened to me in the Roan Highlands where many of the mountains are bald. Basically, I ran my ass off to the tree line and it was not a short run either. Normally I don't give a shit about rain. It's actually quite pleasant to hike in, all the tourist types stay home. But electrical storms you do not fuck with. Especially since marked trails all take you on ridges. How unfortunate for this guy.
