Tried the crappy search but nothing came up for S8

Anyone own a 2008 S8? I've got my eyes on one and would love to hear first hand comments relative to maintenance.

I don't own one, but I've seen and admired them. The V10 engine is .

Same engine as the one in the Gallardo right?

I have a 2007 I got in October 2009. Its the best car I've ever had - better than my two 540's, my AMG E55 and a bunch of lesser cars. Its truly fantastic. What, specifically, do you want to know?

And, yes, its the same engine as gallardo but detuned.

I've been a BMW guy since 2001 and have gotten used to the "everything covered" maintenance/warranty... so I don't have a good feel for the maintenance costs associated with the S8. With a certified pre-owned is the scheduled maintenance covered? if not, what does this service interval usually cost?

All I've heard about A8/S8 is that when stuff starts to break you may be looking at a long wait for parts. Bodywork is only done in a few specialized shops, your car may have to shipped by train to an authorized facility. (the above info may be old.... just from memory)

So how come Audi makes an S8 but bmw doesn't make an M7?

I think this is a problem for cars with full aluminum body.

This is true, and is one of the first inconveniences that I think of when I'm comtemplating an A8. Unless there is one of the few authorized shops in your city, it not only has to be shipped elsewhere, but it also takes much longer for it to be repaired. It also increases insurance cost, a lot. I have a car in a similar situation, but fortunately for me, one of the locations is where I live.

I've seen about a dozen of the new generation A8's over the last couple of days. The car is gorgeous IRL, and looks best, at least to my eye, in black. Most of the ones I've seen have been black but I did see a couple in silver and one in white. The white one had black aftermarket rims and looked awful, IMO. After many good close looks at the car, it still to me resembles an oversized A4 as it did in the pics, but that's not a bad thing, IMO. The car looks great.

I own a D2 S8 (2001-2003) and it has been reliable for the 6000 miles i've driven. I got it at 100k. Now granted, that's the last gen S8 (which, according to audi-nuts, was better built than the current gen, has the bulletproof Audi 4.2L V8) and not the latest. The car definitely drives smaller than it looks. The attention to detail is simply amazing. The best part? It cost me less than a brand new Kia.

Beautiful car, but: a. heavy, b. blah steering feel and c. very expensive to maintain/repair.

My dad had a 2008 S8 and he hated the experiance. Alot of the electrical gizmo's functioned improperly from time to time, and taking it in for servicing put a hurting on his wallet. Now he owns an E60 M5 and although it CAN be expensive to service, its been very reliable and the smg transmission has held up greatly.
