Travel Company Recommendations

Thread Starter
I'm taking the last two weeks of August off for a vacation -- my first in five(!) years. I'm traveling alone, and rather than plan out minute details, I'd like to buy a package trip from a travel company. I'd like to travel overseas, and am open to anywhere other than Western Europe, which I visited in 2000. I've got one option for a trip to Sri Lanka, but would like to obtain additional choices. To that end, I am looking for recommendations for good travel companies.

I highly recommend not employing a travel company. It ruins the spontaneity of travel.

If you do employ one, you should probably go on a trip that is unsafe without guidance or highly outdoorsy. Your August timeline makes me think that Mongolia would be a great vaca option.

Don't underestimate how much fun can be had by improvising. Pick a place, pick a handful of things to do, and guess on the rest.

My parents did a 3 week tour of Australia. They were in a vineyard near Adelaide drinking wine, planning the next couple days. Ran into the head wine-maker, and ended golfing with him the next day at what they described as a "pretty exclusive golf course".

Going on tours .. you can't have that sort of adventure. And it's always nice to move at your own pace, doing what you want when you want. And for your first vacation in 5 years .. floating around will be a whole lot less stressful then trying to keep up to a tour group.

I had great success with www.virtualtourist.com .. with finding good places to eat, and things to do.

Three different, well travelled people have told me that Hong Kong is their favorite city in the entire world, bar none. By the third time I heard that, I knew it had something going for it.

Personally, I'd go to Kenya again. If you've never seen the Rift Valley, well...
