Questions for those in Finance Sector

So, I essentially have a double major from college- Economics and Biology(and Ethics minor) and I want to put my Economics degree to good use(aka, get an internship working for a financial firm that invests in biotech/pharma/health care industry). The only downside to this is that I have no relevant internship experience besides working in a healthcare setting volunteering. Since I did economics through the school of arts I did not take an intro finance course(another downside) but did take the usual stats and money and banking courses alongside all the econ courses. I've emailed some hedge funds that I found on the internet that specifically invest in those areas and am waiting for a response. My sole intent is just to learn how finance/investment work from a hands-on experience rather than from a book. At the same time, I am also pre-med so eventually would like to get my MD/MBA, and am sure that I want to go the practicing physician route, but would like to gain some experience in the investment world. Not only do I want to learn how to invest but also to learn how the government policy will shape business decisions in the health care industry. Am I looking to do too much? Just looking for a bit more direction/discussion For those interested on my senior thesis topics: Econ-How active inflation targeting affects the growth of national economics(esentially the interaction between fiscal and monetary policies and how they interact with an open inflation target to effect the economy) Ethics-Developing a new and more updated definition for brain death. Mostly did research on the research Dr. Shewmon has done in that subject.

what school and what GPA? But yeah, probably just stick with med school. Worry about the MBA later.

Don't mean to be too harsh but unless you have some great contacts, you can pretty much count out getting a good finance job. Mediocre school and below average gpa.

Also going to be tough getting into med school with a 3.1 science gpa, even with a stellar MCAT.

Yeah, I know. Working on bringing that up in the next year.

Some initial thoughts: **If you want to go into investing then getting an internship or entry level program in the healthcare field might be worthwhile...then MBA...then possibly VC but you need to go to a top MBA program to have a shot. **J&J or GE might be a good first step if you can secure a job there. Both have excellent and recognized training programs. I have friends who have gone into both. **You might also look at healthcare consulting boutiques and in that event you should take a "case interview" course. **Some hospital administrators have a MD/MBA background which is somewhat unusual.

Yes. I would just like to hear why you think it is mediocre?

Oh gotcha. That is too bad it is a great school. Worked out pretty well for my Dad. Maybe you shouldn't give advice to some kid if you have no clue about a school. In that area Nova is held in quite high regard. Just like the school I attended is where I work, yet it probably doesn't show up on your list.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that GPA is a nonstarter for many, many jobs. 3.5 is the low end of table stakes in BB finance, for example. Ideally you'd want to be significantly higher than that.
