Here is my small collection of soft core ankle boot porn. From left to right it's Polo made in England buckle boot. I got this from GVH, and they listed the original retail at $795, which leads me to believe that they Crockett & Jones shell cordovan. I really don't know how to discern that though.
The second shoe is a Martegani cognac pebble grain chukka.
Third is a tobacco suede Mantellassi Chukka.

I have the same boots from Polo/C&J. You get this white discolouration around the ceases which easily polishes out and this had let me to suspect that they were shell cordovan as well. Also it has the same chunky thickness typical of this leather. I hadn't noticed that the price might be another hint.

I have them too, as does (IIRC) norcaltransplant. We both agree they are definitely shell. They started seriously hurting my ankles one day and I haven't worn them since, but that may go away with some breaking in. Great looking boots, though.

I had the same experience. They seemed wooden to start with but with each subsequent wearing they get more and more comfortable (they feel a 1/4 size larger now too). Still not as comfortable as my RMWs which feel more comfortable than sneakers fresh out the box, but enough to be a pleasure to wear. However, the vamp feels rather loose and the buckle strap is hard to tighten up. Without seeming to harp on too much, I am amazed that RMWs can be so much nicer to wear than a product which costs two to three times as much. I think it has to do with them being a boot specialist. Shoe makers are often poor at making boots and vice versa.

I haven't had any problems with ankle pain from those boots, but they are a size too large - such are the perils of ebay. I think some insoles could fix the problem. The suede Mantellassi's are my most recent buy. I absolutely love them - they are incredibly comfortable and fit like a glove.

I really crave a pair of those RL cordovan ankle boots.

Mine are a little large too, probably a half size. But with a half insole they fit fine. I just haven't worn them much because it hasn't been cold enough until just now.
