Haha yeah, I'm well aware that the 5 is around the corner. Just impatient I guess and not sure which smartphone to commit to so this will be like a trial for me before I sell one of them to fund the next big phone, whether an LTE Android phone or the iPhone5. I don't use upgrades anyway, so I just bought this one used to hold me over.

Hmmm, maybe I haven't read enough, but I assumed the beta releases of iOS5 were for developers and the like at the moment and wouldn't be readily available for download through Apple. I do use other Apple products so if I can try the new features early too that would be awesome. I'll be looking at some of you hardcore iPhone guys for some guidance in the near future :nodding:

Dude you should had wait, to get the iPhone 4s which would be a improvement without being expensive.

I'll probably get that a lot haha. The whole not getting upgrades thing though means if I want the next iphone new I'll probably have to shell out $700 or so, or wait a few months after that release to find a decently priced used one. I appreciate the concern though!

I have been living with my GSM iPhone 4 since Christmas and I have been very happy with it:slayer:. After looking at the 'droid (an Acer) and BlackBerry (the digital pocket protector) at the time, I wound going with the iPhone because it is a just a well executed product. Unlike most people I have not gone app happy and my only beef is battery life coming from a regular cell phone but that's a problem with all smart phones I guess.

I love my iPhone so much, I'm getting a Macbook Pro next week and get away from Windows at home.

Time to breath some life in this thread with a good ole fashioned rant:

The iPhone 4 is a failure! How is that for dramatic?

It has been a loooong day. I woke up this morning thanks to the alarm on my iPhone. I noticed that the phone was going in and out of service. This is unusual but I figured it was just a glitch and I powered the phone off and then back on. The phone started up as though it was a brand new phone and was requiring me to connect to iTunes. I spent about 2 hours this morning with AT&T and Apple. I powered off several times and did a system restore. No luck and had to get to work.

This afternoon I stopped by the Apple store and a rep was able to restore it but could not get my phone to connect to AT&T. He instructed me to go to their store and have them look at it. I did. They replaced the sim card and the phone worked long enough to get me out of the store and down the road a bit. I noticed several times over the next hour that my phone had no service. Now poor reception is nothing new but I do not get "No Service" very often. Finally I needed to make a call so I restarted the phone to try to get service back and I am now back to square one with the phone prompting me to connect to iTunes.

Thanks to my visit to Apple today I learned that my phone is 52 days past the warranty period. So my only option is to pay $199 for a replacement. I realize how warranties work but I can't help but feel f'd over when the phone is malfunctioning to no fault of my own. iPhone 4 to ME has been a failure. I have experienced the antennae issues, constant problems with the proximity sensor, screen freezing up and now this.

Do not get me wrong I LOVE apple. I have both iPads, MBP, iTouch, multiple iPhones, 2 Ipods, etc. Apple has always provided dependable products but this phone has not lived up to their standards. My 3g iPhone still works as an iTouch for my 7 and 9 year old but my iPhone 4 is shot after 13 months. Hell my iPod mini is still in operation.

So here I am with a dead iPhone 4. What do I do? My plan was to get the next gen iPhone when it came out. Makes it tough to swallow $199 for a replacement phone when the next phone should be out in the next 30-45 days.

I may have to get by with my work Droid for the time being. :(

What would you guys do? Thanks for reading my rant.

That's the risk for buying a second hand phone.

Does anyone know if there is a way to prevent an iPhone from displaying the content of a txt or MMS picture on the screen before you open it? I always find it annoying that it shoes a preview or the photos like it does. Would be happier if it just showed the name of who sent it before I choose to open the message.

Maybe the new notification system coming in the next version of iOS will allow for this setting.

Setting > Mail > Turn off "Preview"

I forget the setting for Messages. i'm running beta 5.0 and can't seem to find it. mine just shows up as the person.

Never-mind. I found it.

EDIT: How's the beta at this point? I am itching to try it.

i like it. i'm ready to get rid of my 3GS though. at time, it runs really slow, but I expected that and now I am having trouble syncing my photos (iPhoto) to the phone. the notification screen is slick and obviously my favorite upgrade. haven't accessed iCloud yet to give my opinion.

don't even get me started on browsing the new SF with safari on it. complete disaster. hope it's a buggy safari and not the norm. my mobile web browsing went to almost 0 once i installed beta 5. beta 4 is was fine. :foo:

I'll keep that in mind.

Also, ATT shows another reason why they suck: http://parislemon.com/post/9075145535/streamlining

yeah i literally threw my phone across the room the first time using the new SF on safari. the pages load fine, but every time i go to scroll up or down, it zooms in to the furthest mag and takes me the reply box. the magnification is so great, i can't get out of the reply box.

ridiculous.

the messaging plan doesn't really bother me. everyone is going to do it eventually. i have unlimited texts anyways and i know 2-3 people with iphones so it's not like i'll be utilizing the imessage a lot.

It's just stupid to not sell a smaller plan. What is unlimited? $20? That's $20 for a service that's basically free on ATT's side. I know all the carriers are moving in this direction, but I just find it all a huge rip-off.

it is dumb but i can't really blame them. it has to be a cash cow for them. when i read about companies doing X to obviously make more money, it pisses me off, but then i stop to think that i do this everyday at my job so how can i be THAT upset.
