Call them and tell them you want the 4S. They'll bend on that.

I'm pretty sure I am eligible for upgrade, but man, teh MRS cannot cuss her iPhone 4 enough. She has to go outside to get any reception, while I (and my lowly iphone3g) can take a call anywhere. It's getting squirrely these days but the end is certainly not near.

Question for all you bitching about the iPhone 4S. Did you feel the same way about the iPhone 3S? I don't remember people complaining about it. Everyone seemed happy. It was the same thing.

The rumors really hurt Apple here with the online folk who read such stuff.

EDIT: RAMBO where did you get that quote? The guy makes no sense. These phone have LONG development cycles. They are sometimes working on future models that we won't see for over a year. The iPhone 4S was in development when Jobs was still in charge. He OK'd it as the design to develop and bring to market this year. Blaming the iPhone 4S on Steve Jobs no longer being around is naive at best.

So.....I'm due for an upgrade. I have a blackberry and am absolutely tired of it. I'm ready for an iphone. Do I get this one or wait until the 5 comes out?

I guess I see both sides-

As Jet said this is Apples product history 3g, 3gs, 4 and 4s. The problem is the iPhone has not been around long enough to establish a pattern. You really could not base it off just the 3g. Also the iPad did not just do a refresh it was a re-design so it was harder to establish what iPhone might have been released. With new Droids coming out every fricken day it did not seem out of the question for Apple to change up the design on a yearly basis. I guess in the future you can assume a refresh every other year for the iPhone.

I also agree with others that bloggers and forums raise the expectations and it is not Apples fault.

Biggest Disappointments-

1. Siri is only for the 4s. This is bullshit! It's a slap in the face to those of us that bought a 4. When the 3gs came out they improved performance, battery life etc. but there was nothing that you could not run on the 3g. I can see doing something like this when you are re-designing a phone but not for a refresh of a phone that has only been out 16 months.

2. They put out the same device they used to put out in 12 months but they took 16. I am not sure what the delay is. Some claim it was problem with suppliers over seas but I am not sure I am buying that. Apple routinely buys up parts early because they have the cash to do it. I know they order screens and such well in advance. It also seems like other phone makers are still pumping phones out as fast as ever. The reasons do not matter I guess. The point is with the extra time they could have created a re-design vs. refreshing the 4. I think it would have been great for the post-Jobs era as well. When Jobs left before Apple got stale. It is not impossible to think it could again.

3. Product cycle and the future of upgrades. With the 4s coming out in October do we assume that Apple gets back into it's pattern of new iPhones next June. I am not so sure that is a given anymore. I feel like this guessing game will get tiring for people and they will switch platforms so they can get a new phone on a more consistent basis. This may only be early adopter types but still a sizable group and one that has been important for Apple.

They seem to be moving towards stricter upgrade periods (18-22 months vs. every 12 months). So it makes it tough to go from a 4 to a 4s knowing that there may be a new iPhone next summer. Going to stricter upgrade periods do not make a lot of sense to me because carriers will be running the risk of losing customers since their contracts will be close to expiring. With an upgrade every 12 months you keep people locked in.

Coming from the blackberry the 4s will seem like the greatest invention ever. Make the move and don't look back.

Who knows. Maybe in the iPhone 5. I would expect it to start turning up in other handsets. The technology is there but not yet available.

People bitch at EVERY Apple release. EVERY release. You go to different forums after they release a new iPod or computer and there is always someone complaining. People want 1 TB of memory on their Nano. The question is-Is the bitching justified? In some instances I say yes. I think if this phone would have been released in June you would not hear as much of the complaining.

Apple brings some of this on themselves. The first 15-20 minutes of a Keynote is patting themselves on the back. They preach that they are revolutionary and when they release new products they are. Eventually they seem to lose interest (ex. iPod) and the product line just flattens out.

Apple redefined what a smartphone should be. Do you really think the market would be flooded with capasitive touchscreen phones with minimal physical buttons if it was not for Apple? Apple's iOS is still the most rock solid and polished mobile OS on the market.

Here's a perfect example of why Android still has a long ways to catch up: http://jawcl.com/post/10648454899/whats-wrong-with-android

People can brag about screen sizes and specs all you want, but if they can't fix issues like these across all product lines they will continue to be out shined by Apple. The user experience is key.

I still think the only company doing it right besides Apple is Microsoft. Windows Mobile 7 is a great OS. It's just been held back by bad marketing, app selection and limited market share.

To be fair, this is fairly standard industry practice. More so when you are a market leader.
