picking up tennis again - Page 2

Do what the pros do and take a lesson or five. I am just getting back to tennis..but my layoff was due to a torn rotator cuff from over serving with the wrong form...

I used to be in your EXACT same situation; i used to play a LOT (compete, etc) in middle school, high school and then stopped playing. Decided to pick it up a couple of years ago again and there is no easy way to get back into it. Just play and play. I felt a huge difference after the 5-6th time playing.

Also, try to play on a weekly basis because it's so easy to fall out of your routine and having to start over.

You need to get the basic form down first. Eye on the ball, proper footwork, timing. Make sure your left foot is out front for forehands, and right for backhand, bend at the knees and follow through the hit, and always keep your feet moving!

And if you can't find someone to practice with, practice against a wall. In New York, I use free handball courts which are perfect and a pretty good workout to boot.

These websites have some really good videos for building solid technique on all the different shot types.

this. i picked up and played twice a week for about 2 years. then i got 5 lessons. i improved more in the 5 lessons than i did in the 2 years. assume you can already keep your eye on the ball, follow through with your swing, position yourself etc (all basics you can teach yourself) then you stand to learn alot from a couple of lessons.
