As title suggests.

Best I have right now is 'Shazam' - Instant music identifier and the bar code scanner app.

Any others I should know about ?

I find a lot of the utilitarian stuff to be superfluous, but I use Public Radio Tuner (the original version... unfortunately the UI and connectivity on the new ver is actually a lot worse) and McSweeney's Small Chair, which they've actually been putting a lot of content up for -- great for travel and boredom.

Wobble - iboobs (lets you put circles on a picture, then the circles jiggle when you shake the phone. best $1.99 I spent) If you are in London, check out the one for the Tube . the Chicago pub. transport tracker is pretty good. IMDB (Free) CNBC (Free) Kindle (Free) Facebook (Free) Rocket Taxi (gives you a list of local taxi companies to call for a cab) Textvision (allows you to use the camera to see what's in front of you while you text and walk.)

Flight track, absoloutly awesome if you fly alot. Espn sport centre, pretty good for all that sport news. Pop group, like the game that is on alot of androids, very addictive, and great on a plane, incidentally I'm top of the world.

Sportacular is my favorite app for sports scores. I've tried all the apps from the major networks but Sportacular is a lot quicker and simpler if all you want is an actual score or the current stats. I also like that you can set it to give you alerts for scoring changes for specific teams if you want.

Do you use the pay or free version of sportacular? I use ESPN, but hate it. Gonna check it out.

Looks like the Netflix app coming out in a month is going to be pretty worthwhile, too. Streaming. Also, FarmVille, so Tokyo Slim and I can trade livestock together over iPhone.

I like the Flixster app for movies Pandora is great too for music

Most useful apps: Grooveshark - any song, anytime. I've stopped using the iPod feature on my phone. This costs like $2 a month or something. Better than Pandora because it also has a "radio" function which is great and gives a lot of good recs. But that isn't even the main draw. You also need to be jailbroken. SlingPlayer Mobile - watch all your tv stations live, streaming. Costs $30 unless you are jailbroken. Also requires you have or buy a slingbox for your home. NYTimes - Finally, something useful to do on the subway. Catch up on all the latest news from an actual reputable source. Allows for fast full-downloads of ALL articles for later offline viewing. GVMobile and TextNow - If you have a Google Voice account, these are great. GVMobile requires jailbreak. Textnow allows for FREE texting. Weather Channel - Much better than native weather app. MyWi - Requires jailbreak. Use your phone for tethering (provide wireless to your laptop through your phone). Skype - Free/dirt cheap international calling. If jailbroken, you can use anwyehre not just wifi. 3g Unrestrictor - Jailbreak only. Allows you to use SlingPlayer and Skype in Edge or 3G locations. WordsWithFriends - The only game I play. It is Scrabble for the iPhone with a huge network of existing players of all skill levels. And of course the most important apps of all: Backgrounder - Jailbreak only. Without this your phone is useless. Allows multitasking of an unlimited number of apps. SbSettings - Allows for quick one-swipe access from any screen to a dashboard that controls brightness, rotation toggle, wi-fi, airplane mode, 3G, Edge, Bluetooth, Process Manager (i.e. Task Manager on Windows - also allows you to clear RAM), numeric battery, Ram usage display, etc. That just about covers it. If not clear from the above, a jailbroken iPhone is the only one worth having. But don't do it unless you know what you are doing.

Agree on each of these apps.

Soundhound is a better (and faster) music identifier than Shazam, and will give you lyrics as well.

Free. I didn't even realize they had a pay version.

The free version limits you to 5 lookups / month (non humming/singing). I think that's more than I use... so no big.

Thanks for all the pointers thus far chaps.

Best (most cleverest) I have up to press are the Shazam app and the barcode scanner app.
