I went to a retirement party this evening for my rabbi - spent 30 years with the congregation. 400 people paid 300 bucks a head for dinner and the party. dinner, then about 20 people gave speaches about how he influenced their lives.

put 500K in a charitable foundation in his name
he got letters from 2 congresmen, the mayor, and a dozen or so other big clergymen
the state house wrote a statement thanking him for his service and congratulating him on his retirement
the city named a street after him
the synagogue hired a composer to write a song in his honor
the synagogue hired an artist to paint a picture of him and his wife
a poet wrote a poem for him'
a person who composes litergy wrote a prayer in his honor

I was thinking how cool this is, how many people get to end their career like this, having influenced so many people in such a positive way, and to be reqarded like this.
