Help me decide between 2 apartments

I'm looking at two different apartments in the same complex. I'm leaning towards this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/6185428...7624088493653/ It's 103 square meters, and all in all it's 3150 a month The price is a little high though, so I'm also considering this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/6185428...7624212882144/ It's 83 square meters and 2250 a month. I will be living alone, except for the occasional weekend- the main reasons for me to go with the bigger one is it's kitchen, and is overall much more nicely furnished, both bedrooms have a bathroom as well. It's also in the newest building in the complex, and faces the sunny side. The other apartment faces north and doesn't get much sun. Other than that, they're pretty similar. To put things in perspective, the first apartment would be 25% of my (after tax) monthly salary. The second apartment would be ~17.5% of my monthly salary. Suggestions?

Taking the rent into consideration, i would take the 2nd(smaller) one.

You make 12000 usd a month after tax? That's bigtime in HK!

Looks like the larger one is on the top floor? If so, it'll get ridiculously hot during the summer.

If one is on the top floor, I'd go with that one. Nothing worse than the sound of people walking in the apartment above you late at night. But yes, it'll probably get very hot unless you have A/C.

Likely chinese yuan, which comes in at ~USD 1,700/month. Which is decidedly smalltime.

I would say that 80 m2 is really all you need in a single person house hold. They could have made the kitchen bigger though. I also like the lamp in the living room of app 2 better. Do you care about the view much? Would the 8% help you in your other endeavours, i.e. traveling, sport, culture, clothing, whatever? PS Leather couches are hot in summer and cold in winter..

Thanks, I'll be taking the smaller apt. I think that the extra 12000 a year could be better spent towards shopping or traveling. 15k a month in China is decidedly bigtime, especially outside of the big cities. Unfortunately, it isn't a lot outside of China. The only thing that makes it worth it is the low cost of living. 15k a month - 2.5k rent - 3k food you're still saving over 1000 USD a month, easily.

FWIW just to clarify I wasn't trying to call you out as a smalltimer or anything, just correcting that other guy. PPP's a joy (or a bitch, depending on where you're living), eh? Anyhow, good luck with your apartment hunting; I moved recently as well, and would honestly advise that you get the smallest place you can tolerate - any bigger than what you need for your sanity and you will just fill it up with shit you don't really need. Any additional $ you save is just icing.
