Camping in California

What are some Yosemite/Sequoia-like camping sites in California that will be available for the end of June? The big three (Yosemite, Sequoia, Big Sur) are all reserved. Are there other options available?

Elsewhere in the Sierras. What kind of camping? I assume you don't mean backpacking?

Tent camping.

Tons of good places - Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Trinity Alps, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, on and on.

What are you looking for? Hiking? Climbing? Fishing? Sleeping next to a river / lake / ocean?

Hm, you're a bit limited then. There's an enormous amount of backpacking campsites only a few miles from the trail head throughout CA. For drive-up camping I would recommend somewhere in the Sierras or near the "big three." For the former, you can usually find campsites that are less occupied a few miles (sometimes up to 30-60 minutes) from the "main attractions" i.e., Yosemite valley.

Have fun with the mountain lions.

camp 4 at yosemite was a fun time, but you need to get there at a certain time in order to get a place to crash. A lot of rock climbers there, but interesting cool people none the less. Don't try sneaky shit since the rangers are on top of their game there though..

Seriously, give us some details and we can hook you up.
The Lost Coast and Bear Harbour come to mind.

+ a gazillion, that's an incredible (and relatively easy) hike.

If you wanna drive up to the campsite with your car, it's gonna be tough. I wanted to camp at death valley a few months ago and in the vastness of that park, they crammed all the tent sites to within 3 yards of one another probably for some ridiculous environmental reason... roughly the equivalent of a homeless encampment under an overpass. I talked to a ranger who recommended some BLM land just outside the park, and we ended up getting a huge empty arroyo all to ourselves, and there was also firewood around (which the Park doesn't allow, but BLM does). So try BLM land if everything else fails.

Some hiking. Sleeping next to a river would be wonderful. Mostly activities with family and enjoying nature (forests, not deserts).

I'm looking for the usual camping sites you drive up to and pitch a tent.

You mentioned next to a river and Big Sur. I've camped here, tent about 30 feet from the Big Sur River: http://www.fernwoodbigsur.com/ Whoa, what the hell? was it seriously that expensive? Haha, maybe I wouldn't recommend that, I can't believe it's that much. Maybe I only camped there because I couldn't find anything else open that weekend. Nonetheless, it was a pretty nice and scenic campground. You can find plenty of decent car-accessible sites in the National Forests in the Sierras that aren't nearly that much. Do you need flush toilets and showers? That will cut down your choices a lot. For some ideas: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/recr...mpgrounds.html and bitly link to recreation.gov reservation site for the area http://bit.ly/ajbJXz
