I like toronto better, having lived in Montreal for the last 7-8 years. Living in the suburbs would suck though. You need easy access to the subway and downtown for it to be enjoyable imo. If you have to drive through traffic every time you need to go somewhere, it would get old fast.
Having lived in North York, downtown Toronto, and Oakville over the course of my life... Suburbs suck a lot, GO Train isn't bad but unless you have a spot to stay downtown for free it's not usually worth the trip. North York isn't great but isn't bad, subway makes it easier to get downtown and most of all BACK, but it's still a bit too much of a trip to go down all the time. Living downtown or in the Annex is awesome. I'm considering U of T for grad studies and want to live in the Annex so badly, I love it down there. You can walk to Yorkville or streetcar to harbourfront in minutes and the subway stops are all over the place.
*sigh* I was supposed to be in Toronto this summer but my job prospects there fell through so I went to my fallback in Pennsylvania
I'm saving money but god damn am I bored.
