Having lived in North York, downtown Toronto, and Oakville over the course of my life... Suburbs suck a lot, GO Train isn't bad but unless you have a spot to stay downtown for free it's not usually worth the trip. North York isn't great but isn't bad, subway makes it easier to get downtown and most of all BACK, but it's still a bit too much of a trip to go down all the time. Living downtown or in the Annex is awesome. I'm considering U of T for grad studies and want to live in the Annex so badly, I love it down there. You can walk to Yorkville or streetcar to harbourfront in minutes and the subway stops are all over the place.

*sigh* I was supposed to be in Toronto this summer but my job prospects there fell through so I went to my fallback in Pennsylvania I'm saving money but god damn am I bored.

bump - a couple of my buddies from new orleans are coming to visit me in toronto, and i sure as fuck am not letting these wild animals stay with me (im fine with them, but i live with other people that can barely deal with regular everyday drinking, nevermind the kind of police trouble me and my nawlins buddies will doubtless get into) long story short, any recommendations for good/cheap hostels/hotels in toronto? they're visiting from august 7th to 15th, so thankfully we don't have to deal with TIFF prices or anything, but cheap would still be nice

Hotwire is always pretty huge for decent deals during the week and on weekends. Did you check Airbnb? Craigslist?

they're staying at this place called "backpackers on dundas" - very decent place, $27/night per head, and a constant revolving door for other college kids from all over the world
