I've been to most of the countries around that part of the world, anything specific that you are looking for?

From Dubrovnik, head down to a town called Budva, Montenegro. The place has been featured on television time and time again in that part of the world. The entire atmosphere there is super. When the wife isn't looking, take a look around as well. Budva has among the most beautiful women you'll see in the region.

Then, make your way to a little city called Ulcinj, Montenegro - Absolutely stunning! Google it for your own confirmation if you must. Clean (albeit not the most luxurious) hotel rooms/spare rooms almost all of which can be found for well under 20 Euros a night. If it's your fancy, you can also find a full scale resort-style hotel room for 45-60 Euros per night. The beaches are gorgeous and the seafood is as fresh as you've tasted. As a bonus, it shouldn't be too crowded this time of year yet either.

You can get to both places through Dubrovnik in a "combi" (large taxi van). Just make sure you ask around so the locals don't pull the wool over your eyes and overcharge.

After, you can move on to Albania into Durres - a lovely port town that also has great beaches and incredible seafood.

Some really beautiful scenery... but as I've stated before, this part of europe is incredibly provincial, to downright backwards. The food often blows. Dubrovnik will almost certainly be your most luxurious stop. The suburbs or in fact anything outside the old city centers are often crushingly depressing.

^ pretty much agree with SF, food isnt' the reason people go. the coast and the mountains have great scenary, the cities are pretty dingy, but have great history. you can see a lot of fortresses that have historic significance, if you want to read up a little before you go. there are a few places with pretty cool old communist hotels, not that nice, but impressive to see. I took a train ride between sofia and Belgrade and passed through fantastic scenary. the old capital and the old port of montenegro are both very very cool.

also, be careful, the gypsies don't fuck around in that part of the world.

those aren't the balkans, diffferent part of the world. I've been to Kiev, that's about it. again, beutiful women who seem to throw themselves at everything with a wallet, and a lot of very nice communist munuments, and cheap caviar and vodka. not a lot more than that.

Thessaloniki? You gotta visit Meteora - I always knew it was somewhere in Europe but never knew where. Then I was passing through for just 3 hours then saw the postcards for Meteora and....

Seconding Budva and Dubrovnik. I would have also suggested a day trip to one of the Dalmatian islands, but it looks like you won't have the time. (Also it's still too cold to swim right now anyway).

Stokely, Don't mention it. I was born in the states but my parents were born and raised in southern Montenegro. I have been to that part of the world almost half a dozen times. If you're lucky enough to make it to Ulcinj, you have to stay at Hotel Dolcino. Brand new and probably on par with a 3.5 star American hotel at a fraction of the price. Interesting you mention rafting - very far from being my thing but I have actually heard there is superb rafting available not far from where we are discussing. Since it seems outdoor activities may be your fancy, I would also recommend hiking. It's a shame the Balkans have been marred for so many years by war and repressive government. God certainly spent a lot of time on that part of the world. Truly breathtaking at times. I would consider spending time in a busy cafe from town to town and maybe try finding a local who knows his $hit. Strike up a conversation (almost every young person you'll meet can converse in English) and ask them to point you to the best entertainment/dining/activity spots. I assure you they would be thrilled to help (especially for a generous tip). Nine times out of ten you will encounter locals who love Americans and would like nothing more than to see you and the ms. enjoy yourselves in their town. Much of that region relies on tourism.
