Living in DC as an intern. Help!

Hey, I'm a long time SF reader, but first time poster. I have a bit of a predicament. I'm an econ major at the U of Arizona and through a bit of schmoozing with the dean of the business school I was able to land and internship at an Econ think tank in DC (Resources for the Future). I got it last minute and will be flying to DC on Saturday and will start working on Monday.

The big issue is that I have nowhere to live. I know many SFers live in DC so I thought I might get some help here. In AZ rent is cheap and places are easy to get. I've found that this is not true in DC. I've emailed dozens of listings on Craigslist and found nothing.

So where do I look? My internship is just east of Dupont Circle. Nothing seems affordable around there (trying to spend <$1000/month). I have seen a few places for much cheaper (like $600) in Columbia Heights. This makes me think there must be something wrong with the neighborhood.

Anyway, where is safe? Where is close to Dupont? Where is cheapish? Your help will be appreciated.

Columbia Heights is fine, but I don't know what kind of place you'll get for $600/mo (i.e., it doesn't exist). You should find a place on/near the 14th St or 16th St corridor, and hopefully near a metro station or a direct bus route. You might be able to find a summer sublet for around $800-1000/mo if you're quick on craigslist. Feel free to PM me a listing and I'll let you know if the place will be kosher for your summer internship. P.S. I live in Columbia Heights, and as far as I know, 1br for under $1000 is as rare as hen's teeth.

Here's one in Tenleytown, which is about 15 min on the red line from Dupont. You'll be at work in less than 30 min. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/d...772064601.html

Thanks for the advice. $750 sounds very reasonable and I see it's right on the red line. It looks like it's not available until June 18th unfortunately. I need it on the 5th. I'll drop them a line anyway to see if they can work with me.

To do this properly, you'll need to start a new thread for everything in DC. Need a gym rec? New thread. Apartment? New thread. Grocery store? New thread. Make sure we know you'll be there.

You can try the various universities. Many of them allow you to rent a dorm room over the summer.

Based on your name, I would recommend tracking down Conne and living with him.

I would not recommend Columbia Heights to a DC newbie. No matter what people might say, it's still a neighborhood in transition. You may want to look in Van Ness (three stops up the Red Line from Dupont Circle); there are many large apartment buildings there. Not the most exciting neighborhood, but you're only here for the summer.

That's what I'll do if I can't find something better by the end of today. GWU wants $250/week to live in a double occupancy dorm room. Prices like that (for not even my own room) disgust me.

As for safety, it's kind of my second priority. If I get mugged, fine. I'll cancel my cards and they can help themselves to approx. $16 I typically carry around.

If any SFers want to open up their home to me I'd pay rent and be eternally grateful. Just throwing that out there.

Found a room in a 3bd house for $700/month in Adams Morgan. Hope the random room mates will be tolerable. And damn, I cut that close.

Congrats! You'll enjoy the area. There's plenty of buses going downtown too, so you'll have an easy commute. Feel free to PM me for local information; I live just up the street.

Nice! Adams Morgan is my neighborhood. It's very nice during the week when the establishments are populated by locals. It's not so nice on Friday and Saturday nights, when it gets invaded by the bridge-and-tunnel crowd.

Good for you. As for your roommates, their quality shouldn't be a concern. You have no business spending a significant amount of time in your apartment during the summer.

Except for when you're banging broads. For people like me, that consumes a lot of time.
