Galarraga was robbed!

I can't believe this crap. Armando Galarraga was robbed of a perfect game! Even the hitter knew he was out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmCNNxRg_Og

Out by a MILE and Jim Joyce smirks as he makes that atrocious call. Sometimes refs really should fear for their lives.

Terrible.

I would've titled this thread, "Blind Umpire Ruins Perfect Game on Totally Obvious Call", but yours works too... Or there's the general baseball thread. Either way, that call was an abomination (this coming from an Indians homer). I feel sorry for Galarraga.

The real shame is Galarraga has been struggling all season and was in the minors two weeks ago.

Joyce has long been known as an awful ump

don't even watch baseball but that is terrible. consol yourselves knowing that this bullshit happens in every sport and its time rules be changed

That would have been the 3rd perfect game this season alone.

A quote from ESPN.com

"Umpire Jim Joyce emphatically called Cleveland's Jason Donald safe, the Detroit Tigers argued and a chorus of groans and boos echoed in Comerica Park. Then Joyce emphatically said he was wrong and later, in tears, hugged Galarraga and apologized. "It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the [stuff] out of it," Joyce said, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires' locker room. "I just cost that kid a perfect game."
"I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay," he said after the Tigers' 3-0 win. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Joyce asked to speak with Galarraga. Denied the first perfect game in Tigers history, Galarraga appreciated the gesture. "You don't see an umpire after the game come out and say, `Hey, let me tell you I'm sorry,' " Galarraga said. "He felt really bad. He didn't even shower."

This is just sad all around. It's sad for Galarraga who threw baseballs first 28 out perfect game, sad for Jim Joyce who we all know would change the call if he could, sad for rookie catcher Alex Avila (someone I played HS ball with and is one of the hardest working, level headed, and generally good individuals you'll ever meet), and sad for the entire Tigers organization/ fan base.

I know it would be completely unprecedented, and I am well aware that baseball is a game that values stats and single game achievements more than any of the other sports, but I would whole- heartedly support MLB retroactively awarding Galarraga a perfect game. It wouldn't change the outcome, as the very next batter grounded out and the game ended. Wishful thinking? Probably, but the kid earned that perfect game.

Kudos to the ref for accepting the fault in this one, but he should still be punished harshly. That is a huge embarasment to the sport.

That's really bad.

He should be a NBA ref.

Calls for instant replay in MLB should be a little louder this morning. Galarraga was pretty tame in his post game interviews, he had a right to be upset but he took it pretty well.

Who cares, right? Right?

It is a big deal. Perfect games in baseball are VERY rare and pitchers 99.9% of the time have one legitimate shot in their entire career for that perfect game. A perfect game is what every pitcher dreams about but very few every accomplish.
